Canceling wedding - first anniversary party?

Tia, on April 26, 2020 at 23:45 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 6
Hi everyone,
I’m posting my ideas because I know a lot of us can relate to each other right now. Our wedding was supposed to be August 8, 2020 - our venue cancelled everything until the end of September, and didn’t have dates available until the new year (one in January, one in March) and they were already booking up for the summer. Before they cancelled on us we already decided no matter what happens we will get married this year. Once we were presented with the option to cancel everything and get our deposits back or reschedule we decided to cancel completely as we did not feel it was worth it to spend $15,000+ on a wedding in the winter, that just wasn’t what we originally imagined. After some thought we have been thinking about having a party on our first anniversary, at a different venue (it would be a much cheaper event all around) so at least we get something, and can still get the chance to celebrate with our friends and family. It would be a casual party, but again better then nothing and that way we can still use our decorations, etc.
Has anyone thought about doing this or been to something like this that can share their experiences? I hope everyone is staying safe and healthy!

Yay! I still believe the date will be good to go!

Actually, we happen to come into contact at the right time with one of the first venues we reached out to when we first got engaged (our dream venue actually) and they put together an elopement package for people in the same position as us! We are all booked in for that and couldn’t be happier! Now we just need to wait and hope that they raise the limit of people for gatherings in Alberta, which I think they will. Either way, we get to have our wedding on our day, 15 people at least but hopefully more, I am even more excited now because the property at the venue is so beautiful and our pictures will be amazing! Life has a funny way of working things out, but I’m happy we at least get a place to celebrate now, that is even better then we imagined!
    Good luck!

It's a scary world we are in and there is no knowing what the future will hold. Our date is August 14th, we are waiting until June to make any decisions. We picked this day since it is our 14th dating anniversary and 14 is our number. We are thinking of continuing to get married on our planned day and if we must then we will hold a big party later and since it's a Friday this year, next year if we party on our 1 year anniversary it would be a Saturday!

Bottom line do what you want for the two of you, this day is about you two no one else!

Be well and try to enjoy the down time with your fiance.

Your decision is what makes your day special and to go forward to do. The thought of the first year anniversary is better and to renew your vows if chosen with friends and family then. You two have considered what's important and being on the same page.

I have attended a few receptions held after the destination weddings and elopements taken place locally. Its nice to know that the couples do celebrate with their loved ones and family that couldn't fly out at their original date as the case being new in a different manner.

We've been talking about eloping on our date and having our reception/party for our first anniversary too! I like the idea of still getting everyone together, maybe having a vow renewal so our parents don't feel like they missed anything. We've bounced the idea around and I'm liking the idea of having our party on the eve of our anniversary so we can have a countdown to it at midnight.

This is exactly what we are thinking at this time! Our date is August 2 and with half of our family across a border, it just doesn’t look like everyone will be able to be together this year so we’re thinking of getting married and then having our “reception” for our first anniversary! (As well as our honeymoon)
