Calling all winter weddings

Jennifer, on July 17, 2018 at 05:20 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 8
Hey ladies, I'm interested to hear if any of you are having or had winter weddings. Especially the Canadians or other northern brides out there. Where you worried about bad weather or snow storms? Do less people rsvp due to weather/travel concerns? Why did you choose winter? Did you go deep winter like Jan/Feb or more winter adjacent like Dec or March? Were pictures inside or outside or both? How did you keep warm in the dress? Does the dress get wet from the snow? I have so many questions!! We picked summer because of all these questions (and more) but now I'm reconsidering. Would love to hear your winter wedding plans?

Thank you, I have come to see it as less of a loss and more of how much she brought to our lives. Telling my mom was the best her response was hilarious and we recorded it. Her tiny footprints will be on my heart forever Smiley smile

I'm so sorry for your loss. I've had 3 ectopics so I understand how hard it can be. It's a beautiful idea to commemorate her with your date choice. I love how winter wedding pics come out, especially if there's fresh snow. The hot chocolate is a great idea!

I’m a little sad I didn’t get to try the poutine bar but it was only because I was so full from everything else! The chicken was amazing! The hors d’ourves were so good- they had samosas, quesadilla bites and bruschetta on these crackers and I’m super glad I came hungry because it was all so good! (I’ve now successfully made myself really hungry just thinking about it)

OOOOHHHH SFU is gorgeous! My fiancé’s brother had his reception there just under a month ago. It was beautiful, food was AMAZING, and if it doesn’t rain going out onto those balconies in the evening was really nice.

I personally am getting married November 23rd, 2019, also in the Vancouver area so it is going to rain because that’s just what it does (but it’s actually good luck for rain on your wedding day so)

we picked November mainly since my family would be flying out from England and it’s one of the cheaper times to fly, and everything is cheaper because it’s off peak, so the venue we have we wouldn’t have been able to afford a Saturday wedding in the summer there.

Winter wedding here as well! Maya and I are both getting married January 19th. We picked the date because we got engaged Dec 28th, 2017, and I figured Summer '18: too soon, Summer '19: too far away. The 19th was the Saturday that perfectly coincided with the cruise we are taking for our honeymoon (11-night southern Caribbean; Sat 19th wedding, Sun 20th travel day, Mon 21st cruise).

Honestly, yes, the winter season did have some set backs... we loved the idea of the Okanagan, or Whistler, but my mom said "be prepared to be the only ones at your wedding"... meaning a snow storm could shut down the highways, scare people from driving, etc.

We compromised to stay in town... We will be getting married on Burnaby Mountain at SFU. (Vancouver Area) ... Once you are up there, you feel like you're in the middle of no where... But there are apartments up there, a school, businesses, and it's a major 4 lane highway... so we are confident that if there were snow that it is a main route to be plowed (plus it's Vancouver, let's be real...)

We are making Plan A rain, and we will be happily surprised with snow or sun.

Our #1 perk to having our wedding, and thus our anniversaries, in January, is that we can escape to sunny weather for any trips we take for the duration of our marriage. And it's the easiest time of year for us to get time off in the future.

I have found that over all, nothing about it being winter changes what we can have and do at our wedding that is important to us. If your #1 important item is to be outdoors, or have an open air reception, or take photos in a field... then winter isn't for you... If you are okay with indoor venues, and are open to different styles/themes, there are lots of perks to a winter wedding.

Our venue is the University, so there is no peak season or off season, it's just reasonably priced year round, however many venues do have off season pricing. Some vendors even have off season pricing, for example, limo companies often do not have minimum rental time at that time of year... so we are getting a one way trip from the reception to the hotel for my hubby and I, for the same price as a cab.

My fiance and I decided that Murphy's Law, if we caved to everyone's suggestions and changed to a summer date, we'd be out more money, plus it would be the one day in a drought that it would rain... We're totally confident with our choice now, and it's going to be beautiful! Can't wait!!!

Although I am having an Autumn wedding my second choice was winter.

Weather: All seasons have something that could happen; it’s just that it’s rain instead of snow. If anything the snow could make your pictures turn out really nice but rain will never do that IMO.

Month: I would personally go with December or February as it is less likely to be -40 like it is here in Winterpeg Manitoba! (I proposed in December 2017 and it was that cold! Ya – I stayed in the car when asking him Smiley tongue )

Pictures: Have them both! Just remember to keep warm in between pictures so you won’t be that red and if you are most photographers can fix that with a little work. Also keep an ice cube in your mouth in between pictures so that you can’t see your breath in the photos. As for the inside – you can get some of you and him with red noses and a couple mugs of hot chocolate and a blanket 😊

Overall I love winter and how crisp the snow pictures would be 😊

Plus then you won't sweat at your wedding and you will probably get a lot of discount as winter is an off season for most places.

So we picked our date January 19th 2019 for a very special reason. It is the day our daughter would have been one, I had a miscarriage a year ago and we will be getting married close to her due date to celebrate her. For me if I were to have a summer wedding it would be more expensive for my family in fort Chipewyan to come because they would need to fly out instead of driving on the winter road. We are planning on having a secondary location depending on the weather. Some light snow would offer some great diffused light for photos. As for keeping warm my bridesmaids will have knitted shawls and we will likely bring hot chocolate to drink. This January in Edmonton it was like only -5 or -10 I’m Edmonton and I’m hoping it’s the same for next year. Depending on the snow I’m sure the bottom of the dress may get wet but after pictures it will be pinned up so it should dry. Good luck picking a season Smiley smile one thing I know is that you can always dress in layers to keep warm in winter. In summer there is only so much you can take off and then it still may be too hot for guests. If not for the importance of our date I think I may have chosen a fall wedding for the outside colours and the inbetween temperature for winter and summer.
