Buffet: Order of Tables

Allison, on April 25, 2019 at 15:45 Posted in Wedding reception 0 23

Hey folks!

Just wondering if anyone has an ideas or suggestions from experience on the best way to handle who goes first for the buffet. So we are going to do the head table, parent tables, siblings & vendors (photographers and videographer) first but then I still have 12 more tables to go eat. Not every one can go all at once so I am trying to figure out a better way to send tables for food than just going in order of number. I don't want the blame to be on me when the last number is the last table that gets to eat you know.

My brother had a questionnaire competition. The DJ would pick two tables at random and ask a question about the bride and groom, the first table to shout the right answer would be next to go up to get food. The only problem with this one is I know there are quiet family members who aren't going to be comfortable when put on the spot like that. I could arrange we at least seat one loud person per table when making the seating chart but that just brings this up to a whole 'nother level of complexity.

Sorry for the long post, I hope I still make sense.... please help!

My parents actually reminded me that they own Bingo with the little spinner that tosses the balls around! We are going to send the specific tables first and then have our DJ just call the number (omitting the letter) from the Bingo game. I guess if you really wanted to kill more time you could have each table play Bingo we aren't going to get that into it.

I did really like the idea of the game where you call on your guests to find something unique though! We thought that was really clever.

Thank you everyone for your help & suggestions (:

Generally, I have seen the Head table go first and after the tables in order by 3 each to avoid waiting period. If there are 2 lines, up to 6 tables can go and that way the numbers can follow through in order.

We are having a buffet and the DJ we hired has worked with our caterer and venue many times, apparently they have a system that works. They start with the tables that have kids and closest to the head table and work to the end. He also announces that this is how it will be done, as kids tend get cranky when they are hungry and can't wait.

I love the idea of a game! I've always just seen they go in table number order.. head table starts, then family, then so on and so forth... through the numbers in order.

It was the first person to find the item. The MC/DJ will have to be the decider if someone has say white mints but not a white tic tac. It was a lot of fun. You could also do a tie breaker too if two people are close. One suggestion is to add items unisex so the men can participate- like the flask or a grey striped tie?

Oh I like this because it really does include everyone! Did anyone ever have the same item? or did they just pick the person who found it first?

I’ve attended many weddings where they played “games” to see what table went first to the buffet.
I’ve seen what you’re suggesting - trivia on the bride and groom. Probably the most fun I’ve had is when the MC asks for a specific but very random item, whoever has the item wins it for their table. It loosens people up too.
For example, who has a tic tac? Or a nickle? Or money clip? Flask?

Ive seen that twice at weddings I’ve attended and even the quietest guests start looking for what’s been called.

I found a game on the internet that I might do. You have a hobby horse by the bridal table. When the buffet is ready ring a bell. The first person to run to the horse and ride it around the bridal table gets to line of first to eat. Then you repeat the process. Pretty sure my guests will hate me after haha.

No, still have table #'s but on the back of each card or thing that you are using to tell what the table # is you could write a letter. So let's say your word is weddingbell (you have 12 tables I think) so written on the back of the card that says table 1 is a W and table 2 is E then your DJ says to check the table # card to see what letter is on the back, when he calls out that letter, it's your tables turn to go eat.

I know I am just going to have to some how accept this, maybe as soon as we are done eating we can go chat with any tables that haven't gone up yet just to kill time for them... idk.

I am not sure I really understand your game - please note, I can easily be confused - are you saying to use letters instead of numbers at each table?

LOVE IT! I would do this in a heartbeat if we had the space but we don't ... definitely going to try to think of some similar competition ideas though that could work.

My Moms first thought was "someone could poke their eye out, then what" ... lol that wouldn't stop me (:

We both cheer for the Blue Jays but don't get too involved in baseball stats. We do however have a hockey rivalry going. He cheers for the leafs and I cheer for the habs... how we stayed together this long no one knows. I love the idea, I am just not sure it works with our mid-summer wedding. Great idea though (:

Oh gosh this sounds like fun but I don't think many of my family members would be up for it, I could see a lot of our guests saying "na that's okay, the next table can go" lol, it would be fun to witness though (:

The last table is always going to be boo we're last but they'll get over it. You could do odd and even table #'s or you could spell out a word and each table has one letter of that word then they go in order of spelling it out. The letter could be written on the table # sign and your DJ could call out the letter.

We had a buffet. We had each table make a paper airplane (we had written the table number on each piece of paper) and then one person from each table went to the dance floor and they all threw their plane at the same time. Furthest got to go first, and it went in order of distance. My dad, even though parents were first, decided to make one and join in the fun.

Are you and your FH into any sports? My best friend has their table numbers as hockey teams in the playoffs and the ranking at the time of their wedding was who got to go first. So first place went first last place last etc. Mind you their wedding was Maple Leafs themed so that fit, I recognize that might not fit unless you are both really into a sport!

One wedding I went to that had a buffet actually made a game of it. They put all the table numbers in a hat and drew out the number. Each table then had to sing a couple lines of a love song in order to go get their food. It was really fun and they didn't allow duplicates of songs, they did announce when everyone was sitting down that they would do this so everyone had time to plan. If this is too much you can also just do a draw at the time and decide that way?
