When are people going to ask the members of your bridal party to be in the party? How close to the wedding date?

We asked them 9 months before the wedding; about 2 weeks after we got engaged. It gives me (and the ladies) time to shop for their dresses and order them with lots of time for alterations. It also lets them have a bit of time to plan bachelor/bachelorette/showers (which we did not ask them to do, but they have mentioned they are). And, a couple of them are from out of town, so we wanted to be sure they would be able to book the time of work, and afford to get here.
