Breech of contract

Veronica, on January 13, 2020 at 11:18 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 6
Our videographer was referred to us by my bridesmaid. This persons work is really good but he said he would work in our budget. We agreed on a price and signed a contract. We haven’t met the person yet and the wedding is beginning of April. We emailed him to set up a meeting to meet him for the first time and sort some things out. His reply email said he was based in LA and in April he would be flying down just for our wedding. He said he would be losing money to work our wedding and asked if we would pay his return flight home. $150 but a plane ticket is worth more than that. Would you pay and keep him happy or not pay and risk a poor quality video?

Thank you for all of your advice, we have decided to pay the $150. We asked for a revised contract including that cost and will be giving it to him once we receive our video.

I agree with the others, check that contract and even get someone else to read it with fresh eyes.

If it comes down to $150 or losing him I would pay it. Is the potential headache worth saving $150? And like others said that could replace any kind of tip you were planning.

If its not in your contract i wouldnt pay it. tell him youre strapped for cash as all your final vendor payments are coming up. thats weird that hes so cheap and that hes including airfare as well....

If that isn't in the contract I wouldn't pay.
Having said that, another option I might consider is paying the $150 and considering it his tip.

If it isn't in the contract I would say that your budget is already super tight and you are sorry that he had to move away. I think it is SUPER unprofessional that he would even have asked you tbh.... Make sure to check the contract though - wouldn't want him to just be able to back out with no consequences. Were you going to tip him? Because if that is roughly what you were going to give him then you could for sure give him that $150 as a tip/return flight ahead of time? That might be good enough?

I can't see somebody botching a wedding video out of spite though. They know this is your special day and not many people would stoop that low.

To be on the safe side of the contract, he should have this in writing or you put on there that the cost of the airline ticket is on you both or half the cost covered if he should be paying the other half of it. I would ask to get a copy of the contract first before meeting to know the terms of his deal ahead of time. He is asking for more than his services to be paid.

Just a point of view to look further into what you should do on your end before meeting or consider looking around for another photographer.
