Attention Willowby Galatea Brides! Need sizing & alterations advice!

Lindsey, on December 7, 2019 at 22:01 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 8

I am 5’1.Measurements are 32” bust, 27” Waist, 35.5” Hips.
I am basically between three sizes due to my measurements. Size 00, 0 & 4.
Consultant recommended a size 4 solely because of my waist size being “bigger”.
However, I’m worried that the bust size will be way to big on me (Size 4 bust is 35”) and I’m not sure what kind of alterations can be done on this specific gown.
I’ve voiced my concerns about the sizing to my consultant and she suggested meeting in the middle at a size 2 and if need be we can take out the waist. (Size 2 waist is 26”)
I know this is a very popular dress, so I am hoping one of the lovely ladies on this forum has some personal experience with alterations.
1. Did you end up sizing up or down?2. What alterations did you have done? 3. Were you satisfied after the alterations? I am most worried about not being able to fill out the bust if the dress is too big in the bust area.

I didn't speak to a seamstress, however, the consultant took a look at the seam allowance for me and did assure me that it had enough seam allowance to be taken out a bit but didn't specify how much. I ended up ordering a size 2, which means the waist may need to be taken out an inch, which she said was do-able. It's worth mentioning that she also said it may not need to be taken out at all because of where the dress falls on the waist.

I'm looking at this gown too but both my bust and hips are 2 sizes smaller than my waist according to the chart. I'm also right on the cusp between standard and plus sizes and there's apparently an up-charge for plus Smiley ups , which I would love to avoid. I think letting out the waist 1.5 to 2 inches would be the cheapest option for me but I don't know if it's possible.

Did the seamstress say how much seam allowance there was and whether letting the dress out was an option?

They don’t have an in house seamstress but the consultants seem to know what they are talking a about.

The owner is going to take a look at the gown today to make sure there is enough seam allowance incase we do need to let it out.

    Thank you!

The consultant is going to check to see what the seam allowance is on the size 2, to make sure it is possible to take out before we order.
I keep asking if it’s a possibility to bring the bust in if I order a size 4 but I haven’t gotten any answers. It’s very confusing!
I know I will be needing a lot of other alterations as well. Hemmed, cup added, straps shortened, possibly a bustle! Oh the joys!

I personally would get it a bit bigger and then they can bring in the bust area for you. you could also call the seamstress you plan to use and ask her what is easier and cheaper for her to do

    Hey Lindsey!

This really is a beautiful dress!! Typically, it is a lot easier for seamstresses to take dresses in rather than let them out. The trouble may come when there isn't actually enough material in the waist to let it out the amount you need. Does this bridal salon have an inhouse seamstress that you would be able to have a consultation with before you order your dress?

I just googled the dress and it is stunning!

From my experience with getting alterations done I would think too big is better than too small. But if the consultant thinks it could be let out I would listen to them. I would be worried that there isn't enough fabric to let out, but it sounds like you only need an inch!
My dress is so different from yours. I bought a sample and it needed hemmed, buttons replaced, a bustle added, and one side of the bust taken in (weird). My seamstress was able to do it all. An experienced seamstress should be able to take a dress down several sizes and make custom alterations for your size or preference (Mine was telling me about a prom dress where she removed a train and used the fabric to make the dress less low in the back so the client could wear a bra, seriously endless possibilities with the right talent)
