Are alterations more expensive in house?

Rachel, on January 12, 2022 at 14:17 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 12
I found the alteration quotes from the store I ordered my dress through to be a bit high. Something like $250 just to shorten the train if I remember correctly. Is it common for the shops to charge more than outside seamstresses? Is this to cover storage of the dress as well? I'm debating finding an outside seamstress but I'd love to hear opinions on pros/cons to each option.

Oh darn, that kinda sucks, definitely more convenient to have them store it while working on it and between fittings, it will all work though ☺️

That being said though, it really depends on what you're doing. If it's just a matter of trimming the sleeves and pant legs, that's nothing and can be done in-house. If your FH needs to do more work like tapering or letting things out/taking things in (ie waist of jacket), it will depend on the store. Moores should be fine but I've seen some questionable work done in other department stores.

Yeah I was very impressed with the alterations they did even if it was 12 years ago! I know it's hard to judge if there's no reviews for that sort of thing!

The seamstress I've been chatting with also runs out of her home but her before and after photos and reviews are amazing. Plus that sounds very reasonable for cost!!

Oh thats so great you've had prior experience with your shop and seamstress! I think another thing is I've just heard a few too many horror stories about in-store alterations (mostly about a different franchise though) but if you already know they'll do good work then that's awesome! My bridal shop has a great reputation but no reviews specifically on alterations to compare to seamstresses I've been chatting with so it feels like an unknown, in addition to being more expensive

That's almost exactly what I've been quoted by each as well. The only thing I'll miss is that the seamstress I'm leaning toward can't store my dress, but I'm sure I can find somewhere safe to keep it between fittings.

My alterations will cost $600, a lot of work to the bust area, hips taken in a bit and a bustle added, that’s going to outside seamstress, other people and bridal shops were quoting me $900-1000

I'm sticking with in house alterations even if its a little more expensive they know my dress and the ladies there are amazing. I bought my grad dress from them as well and they did an amazing job. It all depends on how much you think is too expensive and if you're comfortable with someone else

I can't speak for dresses (especially without knowing how complicated your dress is) but with men's wear, basic alterations are cheaper in-house than outside.

I'm getting mine done from someone who does it in her house and my quote was $265 for hemming it, adding a bustle, and attaching the straps.
