Androgynous wedding suits for women?

Katrin, on January 13, 2019 at 16:37 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 8

I found my wedding dress yesterday (at an amazing discount bridal store and is the most beautiful dress I've ever seen) but my female fiancee is looking for a suit that's very androgynous. She is looking for one that is very straight with one button on the front, but fits beautifully to her shape. A lot of men's pants are not wide enough in the hips and the jacket tends to be way too long. We are in the Ottawa area and were thinking of checking out Nordstrom, but are there any other options? She'd rather not order online and the few men's suits places we've looked don't seem very comfortable working with women/LGBT folks. They weren't aggressive, but she didn't feel very comfortable there. We are looking for a place similar to Wild Fang in Portland, but a little fancier. We are also open to driving down to Montreal or Toronto too if there are any places there with options for gender-noncomforming folks.

Any suggestions?

I was about to suggest Wildfang! How about Bindle & Keep and Sumissura?

That's awesome! For the suit, how does she want it to fit? Would she prefer a more form-fitting cut or a more straight cut?

The problem with buying pre-made is the binary tailoring of men's/women's suits. If she prefers the waist tailoring of women's suits, I'd suggest RW&Co and Le Chateau for quality. I've never shopped at Nordström's but I'm sure they're good. I know some bridal places carry women's suits too, which is another option.

If she prefers a straighter cut closer to men's suits, you'll probably have to go custom. The problem with custom too is I've only seen LGBT specific tailors in the US, so finding a good tailor that can work with different body types will have some trial-and-error.

There is another option though which may take some time: You could try buying women's boot-leg pants and a men's blazer the same colour to alter down, but be very specific with your sewer that you don't want a traditional women's cut.

I hope this works out for you!

I agree with a bunch of brides here that she might want to check getting her suit made custom! I would suggest trying on a bunch of different styles, from different stores and taking notes on what she liked/didn't like. That'll help the tailor make the perfect suit for her!

Have you checked Banana Republic and Simons? Both stores have surprised me quite a bit when I had to buy blazers and pants.

I would look into a custom suit. You can start from scratch and make it EXACTLY what you want. Also with any outfit, alterations are almsit expected, so if something is a bit too wide, long, etc, it can be tapered/hemmed.

Consider custom, and Asos (though I realize she doesn’t want anything from online). Also consider BLDHN (? The Anthropologie wedding shop)

Have you looked in Le Chateau? I feel like I’ve seen them in there when I’ve looked through. I know it’s really cheap but I’ve definitely seen them in H&M too. R&W might have some? They definitely do dressier stuff. Maybe check out the Bay, I’m sure some of the brands have something.

Hope this helps! It sounds like it’s been a hassle so far!

I think your best bet would be looking at more local shops like you mentioned Nordstrom or maybe the Bay! Maybe venture downtown and check out shops in malls there that are more business oriented? A nice women's pant suit might give the vibe you're looking for that would fit her body shape but still have the suit aspect to it! Some bridal shops do offer pant suits too maybe shell have luck there too?
