Alternate seating for our vulumptious guests

Vanessa, on August 21, 2017 at 20:53 Posted in Wedding reception 0 16

I have a question for everyone. I have raised the question in regards to the ceremony for outside ceremony seating but I will have plus size guests including dad, FH, and family and friends. The average rental chair only is load rated up to what they say 300 lbs (I don't trust it fully) I have family and guests that are above this. My FH is 6'6" and we have friends that are the same height and average 300-400 lbs. What have you used? Or have you suggested for their own comfort to bring their own lawn chair? My dad said that he would be happy using his own directors style lawn chair as he is quite content with it and does not want to sit in the crap the rental companies have. I want everyone to be comfortable. Let me know.

That's totally fine. Sometimes we don't always have time to read everyone's posts.

If I could find a purple directors chair and a black directors chair for rent for 3.00 a piece I would totally do it lol. The chairs now a days are so uncomfy. I am not a tiny person either and I want everyone to be as comfy as possible.

There is someone who rents benches but 10.00 each and only fit 4 people per bench plus mileage. The cost is really expensive.

Rent out larger more comfortable chairs for those guests and have then ready for them when they arrive :-) I feel bringing own chair will draw attention to them.

Letting them bring their own chairs is a good option I think. You said they are more than comfortable doing that, and of course you'd want them to be comfortable during the ceremony.

I was at an outdoor wedding recently, and they used nicely decorated wooden benches, I'm sure you should be able to rent them.

I understand. I have wide hips and some lower back problems so most chairs aren't that great for me. I know that whatever solution you come up with will make everyone happy.

I'm not worried about wood. Where we live we are surrounded by forest and bush. Our town use to be one of Canada's major paper mills until they tore it down. My parents and future in laws have tons of forest/bush. That will not be a problem. But yes we have just under a year to do it. Smiley smile

You have a year to gather tree trunk pieces. A lot of times people will advertise on kijiji "free wood". They've just cut down a tree and want it gone. All you have to do is bring a chain saw and a truck!

There have been lots of church pews for sale in Manitoba lately but you have to buy in bulk. Our tables will be round so benches won't be the best solution but I like the idea of the tree trunk pieces and plywood. I have also thought of those instead of the hay bales for the ceremony. Lots to think of.

Our plus size guests like I said our very close friends whom bring their own lawn chairs where ever they go including my dad and my FH so I do not think they would be offended for their own comfort. Especially if I tell them that our chairs may not be all that comfy through out the night as we are having an after party and leaving it up to them for the rest of the night. My dad wants his own chair as he has issues with his hips too.

I think you either have to let people bring their own chairs, stand or rent some benches or hay bails. I think these would be the best options that don't single people out.

This is a real concern since people have become quite a bit larger in the past 30 years. You don't want to single anyone out by saying, "These seats are for the heavy people, and those are for the under 300 lbs. guests". The other thing to think about is chair legs sinking into the ground if it's soft due to rain. What about benches made with half inch plywood set on tree trunk pieces? You would need 3 pieces of trunk under each board so that it doesn't bend in the centre. The other thing that comes to mind are church pews which are usually made of solid oak. I don't know where you'd get them. The work involved to have them transported would also cause a problem. I don't think I've helped very much but this is a difficult issue to solve.
