Alterations costs

Amanda, on April 27, 2022 at 15:34 Posted in Wedding fashion 0 6

So there are guidelines for the cost of just about everything available online. I've referenced all kinds of articles to give me a ballpark of what my budget can provide so I have realistic ideas when I talk to vendors. Except alterations.

I understand this can vary greatly from tailor to tailor, city to city, province to province etc. Tailors and seamstresses are very much worth their prices from my experience so I'm not saying it should be cheaper. Would have been nice to be able to better estimate the actual cost though. Just got my alterations quote from my bridal store and it's 33% of my dress price. So my slightly over budget dress is now a lot over budget. I had included $300 for hemming and alterations, but my bill is $560 if everything goes right the first time.

I had a bridesmaid dress done at the same time (am in a friend's wedding party two weeks before my own wedding. I do not recommend ever doing this!) and it's costing $150 on a $350 dress to hem and tack down two pleats so it lays nicely. Previously I had purchased a used ballgown that definitely didn't suit me and had it altered hoping that would help and it cost me about $500 (which was 2/3s of the dress price). (Side note, anyone need a beautiful ready-to-wear ballgown? She's for sale!)

For anyone wondering how much to budget for alterations, go higher than you think. Given my numbers (which is a very small sample size) estimate at least 30% of your dress cost.

I have heard many people discuss the price of alterations on dresses and in general they are pretty high. IF you happen to know someone who has the skillset I would connect with them and see what they feel needs to be done and how much it would cost.

My alterations are costing around $400 on a $2000 dress, the only thing that needed alterations was the length (and she’s adding some kind of clips so I don’t have to hold the train).

You can also look at other tailors or seamstresses in your area. I'm in Victoria BC and there are a handful of tailors downtown and several more with home businesses. Unless you live in a very small town you should have options.

Also you have your dress on with the shoes you will be wearing, so it shouldn't be hemmed too short unless you change your shoes to taller ones.

I paid $1000 for my dress and my alterations cost is around $400.
I think it really depends on the style of dress. A coworker of mine has a simple satin dress and her alterations are under $100. But if your dress has lace, beading or horse hair trim that's what is really going to make the alterations expensive.

This is what I'm afraid of, I don't want to go back to David's Bridal. I have a family friend who makes dresses for a living, but I'm scared to go and it gets messed up. I'm so torn. I just don't want her to hem it to short.
