airbnb Wedding?

Devyn, on December 27, 2020 at 18:19 Posted in Plan a wedding 1 9
Has anyone planned or thought of doing their ceremony/reception at a nice airbnb that allows parties? Our wedding will be small, no more than 50 people and mostly just friends. We don't want to spend a ton of money on a plated dinner and full ceremony. We would also be able to sleep there, take time to decorate the way we want it decorated, make our own wine to save some money. So many options! Has anyone considered this? If so, why did you not go with it? If you did, any advice?

Airbnb as hotels would be around somewhat the same due to the effect of wedding function being held on their property. It's good your notifying the owners of what you want done though they may have rental costs too.

Cabins on the other hand may be an alternative choice to have your celebration take place where family and friends can stay. One cabin can be set up for your wedding and to celebrate your new life together as it would be yours to decorate. Has this option been considered to look into? Your costs are not much as an Airbnb.

Ahh, didn't know you wanted the whole party sleeping over. That's a different story. Either way, the property may allow weddings but if you find it and book via airBNB and they find that you're using it for any type of party, they will kill the deal (and possibly not refund your booking fee). Just a warning. And as Samantha said, if you're doing this for cost effective sake, it won't be as cheap as you think it would be.

Renting chairs doesn't mean seating arrangements. You can't expect your guests to stand all day and night at your wedding. And a lot of venues provide options that aren't plated dinners. You can do cocktail style apps or food stations (pending covid restrictions). Also, you may not want bartenders but if I was the owner of the property and know that you're planning a wild night with alcohol, I would for sure demand liability insurance, a special occasion permit, and licensed servers so that everyone won't get pissed drunk and wreck the place. You can get lucky and find a spot that won't care for any of the rules but if something bad happens to the property, or one of your guests does something bad on their way home, you'd be on the hook for it.

This was an option that we considered and I found a perfect one! We also had a plan of about 50 guests and the wedding party/immediate family would stay over the night before the wedding and help decorate etc etc. So I messaged the owner and told them the plan and she directed me to a company that would help with everything that I would have to hire. That's when I find out that we'd have to rent extra bathrooms, go through a specific caterer, plus add an extra $5000 for the use of the barn that they had on site in case the weather didn't cooperate. It was just adding up way too much and way too fast for us. So we went a different way. If money hadn't been an issue then we would've gone for it but it was things that we just didn't plan for. I'm sure if I had searched further we could've found one that was less restrictive but I just felt defeated after that. So just bear in mind that could happen once you say you're planning an event.

There are actually several properties where I am looking that allow weddings to take place. We also aren't looking for something traditional. Basically, I am looking for a quick ceremony and a party at this point. I don't want a ballroom or conference room wedding. I don't want seating arrangements, plated dinners, bar tenders, etc. I just want my partner and I and our close friends and family to have a fun night. I also have a photographer and makeup artist/hair stylist that I would bring from my home town (close friends). An airbnb would give them their own rooms, opposed to me paying for their hotel rooms. Wedding party could also chip in a tiny bit and stay in the house as well.

You would think it's more expensive to go to a hotel but the thing is, any property that can hold 50 people won't be cheaper than your hotel room, which is usually discounted for wedding couples. In fact, it's probably more expensive.

And even if you were to do it on a cottage/farm property, you would have to pay for chairs, a power source (unless you want to run 20 extension cords from inside the house to wherever you're holding the ceremony, or keep it without amplified sound which would be hard to hear for people in the back), and porta-potties (50 people dressed nicely sharing one or two bathrooms can be messy). You would also have to pay for liability insurance, a license to serve alcohol, and servers to serve the alcohol whereas these event fees you're trying to avoid at a venue would cover all that.

Thanks for the input! We just don't want to spend the money on hotel rooms and event fees, etc. We are looking at doing it all in one shot and spending money on the honey moon later. We are looking at a wedding in 2022, and out friends and family want to be vaccinated, so that should help.

Airbnb has banned parties on their listed properties due to covid.

I think your best bet is to book a hotel that has a meeting room that can host 50 in a cocktail-style reception. There are tons of smaller hotels across the GTHA and Niagara area that hosts meetings but not banquets. You can stay in one of the guest rooms, have your bridal party meet you there to get read, and host your ceremony and cocktail in the same meeting room.
