2021 weddings... are they happening?

Hailey, on November 17, 2020 at 13:27 Posted in Plan a wedding 0 7
Hi there,
Just trying to get some opinions on upcoming weddings. We were supposed to get married Sept 24th 2020. This was postponed to Sept 23rd 2021...I know it’s a long way off however problem one my fiancé and I live in BC our wedding is supposed to take place in Ontario.. problem two we also have several guests traveling from BC... I’m worried we are setting ourselves up for more disappointment if they implement 14 day quarantines/ hosting numbers stay small ...but being so far out how do we decide what to do? My venue is offering 90% back if they fill my date so I feel pressured to make this decision sooner than later... do we just say screw it and elope? This is keeping me up at night I’d love to know what everyone else is thinking!

We have all seen how much of a rollercoaster a few months can be, so it's impossible to say.
If you're willing to adapt and sacrifice then absolutely you can get married in 2021. If you really want a "normal" pre-pandemic style wedding with buffets and dancing and large groups then I would expect to need to wait until 2022 at least.

We are hoping to have our reception next fall, but who knows if that will actually happen! I really loved having a small group for our ceremony this year. It was so much more intimate and I got to spend time with my husband and our guests because there weren't 100+ of them, so I would say I'm pro elopement/small wedding.

Next year is to wait for results of Covid numbers heading in the right direction to have celebrations happening for weddings and more. Venues will hopefully fulfill their services to couples hosting their day with the full guest list.

There is hope to get married beforehand and still keep the venue as a back up plan for reception, vow renewal or second ceremony (no actual Officiant present) with all the guests attending. The restrictions may be lifted by then and you will have an enjoyable occasion to celebrate.

My wedding is June 2021, and it’s happening. Even with restrictions in place, the limit of guests for weddings hasn’t been lower than 50 where I am from.. so I just found a large enough venue for distancing, and we got our guest list down to 50 people. It’s still going to be a special day. As long as we can share it with our most important guests, everyone else will understand.

I personally think it's too soon to tell what might happen with this pandemic. But how long do you have to get your money back from your venue? I would wait until that date to make a decision. You never know, things might turn out for the better by then.

How long do you have to get the 90% refund if you cancel? I would wait until that date to decide for sure. September next year there will hopefully be an effective vaccine but I agree christiana that restrictions will probably released slowly. So your guest list size would have to be considered too. If it's big then it might still be restricted where as if it's small like 50 people it might be fine.

How many guests are you having? Would it not be easier for you to have the wedding in BC where you and your guests live than in Ontario?

I think it's too soon to tell and I'd hold out as long as you can before making a decision. However if you're hoping for a completely normal wedding with absolutely no restrictions then I think you're probably better off cancelling and getting your 90% refund.

If vaccines do become available in the first part of the year and they work well (fingers crossed!) the restrictions we have right now will have to be slowly relaxed over time. I imagine there will still be some restrictions next September with international travel and probably still limits on gathering sizes. It's also possible that travel won't be as big of an issue by next fall if they can improve the accuracy of rapid testing. I don't think there will be any completely "normal" weddings until 2022 but as long as everything goes to plan there shouldn't be this number of cases next fall and there shouldn't be as many restrictions as we have right now.
