Wooden slabs

Marla, on August 7, 2018 at 00:31 Posted in DIY 0 5
Okay, so I’m in A bit of a stressful situation! My lovely sister/ maid of honour ordered me 100 unfinished wooden slabs to use as charger plates for my wedding on September 8th. (I know I sound sarcastic, but believe me I am not! I love all her ideas and help!) I absolutely love this idea, but now that we have the wooden slabs in our possession, I’m extremely nervous. Today we picked up our freshly cut wooden slabs (maple) and went to town rough sanding, and then I finished them with some fine sanding.

My question for you all, have you ever taken on this type of project? Do I need to seal this freshly cut wood so that the bark doesn’t come off? Should I use varathane on top of the slabs even though they are not completely dry?

My biggest worrry is BUGS. How do I make sure that there are no bugs living in the bark? How do I kill them without ruining the wood? Am I crazy for even thinking about this? The last thing I want is for my tables to look beautiful with a side of gross bugs! HELP!

Any advice on this type of project is needed and appreciated!

I wouldn't be worried about bugs! They usually only live in and around the bark (if they are further into the wood it is REALLY noticeable!
I think sanding should be fine enough! Just make sure you can rub your hand across it with no splinters or anything! Also I would run some nylons on and around them! Just say one falls off the table will it ruin a dress or a pair of nylons on the way down?
If you're willing I would so get a stencil to paint your initials or wedding date on the slabs to have as a giveaway at the end too!! Would be a gorgeous keepsake!

Sanding makes it smoother though just enough to give that coating. I think they are the same, make sure though.

Does sanding the bark take away from the look? Or does it keep its colour? Is varnish the same thing as varathane? Thank you so much for your advice!

Sand the bark down and varnish it if needed. That way the coating is not allowing for any bugs to get in.

The cuts wouldn't have any bugs as for concerns if left out for long time when working. You should be ok and a nice touch for the table.
