Who is giving a speech at your reception?

Joey, on October 11, 2017 at 08:11 Posted in Wedding reception 0 9

Toasts and speeches are a touching part of your reception, where your nearest and dearest get to talk about their love for you, what they admire about you as a couple, and of course get to roast you a little bit! Who have you invited to give a speech at your wedding? Have you given them any guidelines for what they'll say? Will you be making a speech yourself?

Not finalized yet, but we will likely have:

Emcee - short speech to start it off

    Maid of Honour 1

    Maid of Honour 2

    Best Man

    1 Groomsman

    My Mom and Dad

    Fiance's Mom and Step-dad

(Unsure if fiance's biological Dad wants to make a speech, TBA)

Myself and Fiance to finish up with a short speech

Our wedding party and guests are mostly 20-30 somethings with some fun family members, all good speakers who will be prepared ahead of time. Maybe it's just me, but I LOVE the speeches part of weddings!

My husband's brother (the best man) made a speech. He was very reluctant to do so but rose to the occasion. My maid of honour said a few words. She had put it on her phone but when it came time, half of it was missing and she was so upset. So she did the best she could and did really well. Then my husband and I each took a turn to speak. He is a very shy person normally but came through for the speech and was amazing. Many people commented on how he could command an audience. I had the opportunity to call forward my 4 adult children to introduce to everyone. It was a special moment and I must admit that I was kind of awestruck that these 3 large men and 1 woman all came from me. It felt like my lifetime achievement was standing before me. Wow!

We had the MOH and Best Man, our parents and then finally us. We timed it to go along with dinner service and it worked out pretty well.

We did MoH and BM. We didn't want to have lots of speeches.

Having the MC's do a short little intro, and will introduce the bridal party, and both sets of parents. Then MOH and BM to make a speech each, then both parents, and then the groom and myself. Smiley smile After that it's time to eat!!

We had the following speeches at our wedding:

the MC (our friend. this one was unexpected but very short)

    Best man

    2 groomsmen

Maid and Matron of honour (together)

    Both sets of parents

    Us

We told everyone to keep it around 3 minutes or so as we didn't want the get in the quagmire of really long speeches. The girls were allowed around 2-3 minutes each so their speech was longer than the rest but there were two of them.

I've been to too many weddings where the speeches last 2 hours or more. We have made a point to only have certain people do speeches and only if they want. My dad and my husband's parents will make speeches and maybe his brother and that's it. My MOH can do one if she wants but she is is certainly not obligated to.
