Wedding licence & registration time?

Katherine, on December 31, 2016 at 11:31 Posted in Before the wedding 0 8

Hi all,

I've recently come to the realisation after some research that there is way too much wait time after you get married for the marriage certificate. The reason why this is a big issue for me is because my soon to be husband is British and after the wedding I need to get a spouse visa so I can go back with him the England. However it seems that the process of the marriage licence registration and getting a marriage certificate and the spouse visa could potentially take up to 9 months.

If anyone knows any fast tracks or ways around this that would be very helpful!

Thanks,

Yeah that might have been because they had to mail it internationally. Maybe your officiant can help you get your license quicker?

So I did ask last night- and got some info- that might be useless, or a bit disheartening for you Smiley sad

Sue (FMIL) says don't waste your money paying for the expedited processing. They paid it and it still took 90 days- the explination was that the fee does not guarantee faster service, it just helps Smiley atonished

She did say that you can apply for certain Visas while in the country- but certain ones you can't, so ask an immigration lawyer. It sounds like you want to get over there in a hurry, so it might be most suitable to apply while you are there as a "guest". For the Visa they were applying for the service was estimated to be faster if FFIL had been in the country....but he didn't know that until he had already applied from Canada.

FFIL was actually turned down for the spouse Visa- but this has more to to with their personal situation (he is retired) than anything that i think would apply to a young couple.

Good luck! I hope this works out for you!

A month is much too long for my situation, so I'm hoping it can be quicker!

Ya that helps a bit! I know most of the processes can be expedited so I'm still figuring out how long the whole process will take and what my best option is.

If you find out anything more, please let me know. I do plan on contacting an immigration lawyer but haven't yet.

I'm not sure about Ontario but we got married in BC and we got our marriage license sent to us in California a little over a month after the wedding. Hopefully they can expedite the process for you!

My future in-laws are actually going through this! My FMIL is British and they have decided to move there for a few years......they already had their marriage certificate of course (they have been married a long while), but the spouse Visa for FFIL took about 3 months, and gave them a really hard time Smiley sad
I know you can pay the expedite the process though, And apparently you can apply for some sort of temporary license in the meantime.

Not sure if any of that helps - I am seeing them tomorrow and I can see if they have any tips. Maybe consult an immigration lawyer about options?

It depends on your officiant and how quickly they get the license to Stats Canada before you can get your certificate. I was just told this today when we got our marriage license. She said to wait at least a few weeks before requesting it. I'm not sure if Stats Canada drags their feet or not.
