Wedding in the states

Jon&brandi, on January 4, 2017 at 19:08 Posted in Before the wedding 0 4

Looking for advice on our wedding in the States, mostly related to Marriage Licenses and info the bride may need for changing her name on documentation, that sort of thing. Is there a recommended timeframe before the wedding to look into these issues?

Hi Jon & Brandi! I had the opposite! I live in the States and got married in Canada. Smiley winking As Maria mentioned, you definitely want to check on the requirements of the state that you're getting married in. Generally you need to pick up your marriage license in advance of the wedding and it's valid for 90 days. Some states have a waiting period before you get married so make sure to research what it is so you have enough time to get the license. The American Wedding Wire site or The Knot might have some useful tools for you.

For changing names and everything, you would still do that in Canada. You might need to have your marriage license recognized in Canada but they should accept a foreign marriage license.

Where are you getting married in the US?

Hi Jon, welcome to WW Canada Community! Im very happy to see you here Smiley smile

I notice you are planning your wedding between Weddingwire.ca and Weddingwire.com, this is great beacuse this way you can take advantaje of both services. Well, I did some reaserch and this is what I found about your question:

    1. Find the government website of the city or district your are agetting married in.

    2. Once you know in which municipality your nuptials will take place, you'll need to locate where to obtain the license. It might be city hall, the city or town clerk's office, or the marriage license bureau in the county where you plan to wed.

    3. Requirements do vary by state, here is a checklist:

    - Birth certificates

    - Parental consent if under age (usually under 18); you may also need court consent in this case

    - Photo identification (driver's license, state ID card, passport or birth certificate)

    - Social Security number

    - Proof of citizenship and/or residence

    - Divorce decree if divorced

    - Death certificate if widowed

There's also this disccusion in Weddingwire.com that is useful for you.

You should meet Katherine, she created this disscusion about wedding license and timming:

    Wedding licence & registration time?

Let me know if you find this helpful and how are you preparations going Smiley smile
