Wedding Gifts and Covid-19

Sarah, on April 2, 2020 at 12:08 Posted in Before the wedding 0 4

Hi everyone!

We just received our first wedding gift in the mail, and we are curious about when it is generally okay to open them? We assume the right time would be after the wedding, because it's not uncommon for people to have gift openings after their wedding. We will personally not be doing any get-together for gift opening.

My concern is that we likely have to postpone our wedding due to COVID-19, so this gift will just be sitting at our home, unopened until next year. How would you handle this? Would you then consider opening it before hand? Or wait? Would you be concerned if, for example, the gift is glasses or plates and they were broken but you wouldn't find out until next year then?

Any advice is appreciated!

This is the article I found about opening wedding gifts before the big day. Yes you open them and send thank you as soon as you can.

I've heard it's ok to open them right away, it gives you time to get a head start on thank you notes! Plus most people wouldn't send it if they didn't want you to enjoy it.

I’m sure there’s etiquette that says you don’t open it until after the wedding but these are unprecedented times and I think you should do what your comfortable with.

As a guest, I would appreciate a thank you card sooner than later but that’s just me.
