Wedding Cakes

Abbie, on April 17, 2021 at 13:20 Posted in Wedding reception 0 14
Our venue asked us for ideas regarding wedding cakes and I’m honestly totally at a loss for where to start.... does two tiers sound like a good size for 50 guests? (Considering dessert is also included in the meal)

Can your venue pre-cut the cake and serve it to individual guests at their tables? That way it will for sure go instead of you needing people to actively want and go after the cake.

I'm a professional baker and I can tell you that if you're planning on serving dessert AND having cake, you can guarantee that not everyone will want a piece of cake. If you're having 50 guests, I would say an 8" & 6" cake would be sufficient and you might end up taking some home too.

I feel like that's everyone's worry but I don't know if that's what bakers use to guilt you into buying a bigger cake. In reality (based on 10 married friends/relatives whose weddings I've attended), if you account for everyone getting a regular slice, you're bound to take a ton of leftovers home. Which is fine if you're okay with that but every couple whose wedding I attended told me they had to take home more than half their cake. At 50 people, it might not be so bad but I would get sick of cake real fast if I had to down even 10 people's portions. Imagine for those with 100+ guests, it would become a real chore to eat 20+ portions post wedding after a slice (or two). I just feel like it's such a waste of money to pay for something that will either get thrown away to make room in the freezer or going stale.

I suppose I’m just worried about not having enough - just in case everyone wants a slice!

Thank you, Amanda! Smiley smile Our venue also does cakes and they asked me to send some pics of what I was looking for in order to get an estimate and I didn’t have a clue where to start!

My fiance and I's dinner comes with mini desserts but we are also having a cake for our wedding. I don't want to look back on our wedding day and wish I had a cake if we decided against it just because dessert is included with our meal from the venue.

It's totally up to you on how much cake you want to have. We're making sure that there's enough slices for each guests and if we have leftovers, so be it! More for us to enjoy after the wedding!

I would check with your cake person. Usually they know what sizes works best for how many people you are having. For instance this is from our cake person sizes

    4" - 6 Round slices & 8 Square slices

    6" - 12 Round & 18 Square

    8" - 24 Round & 32 Square

    9" - 34 Round & 41 Square

    10" - 39 Round & 50 Square

    12" - 56 Round & 72 Square

    14" - 78 Round & 98 Square

    16" - 100 Round & 128 Square

I'm in the opposite mind set. If dessert is served with my meal, the likelihood of everyone going for a piece of cake is slim. All my friends who got married had more than half of their cake leftover, which is cumbersome especially for those living in condos with tiny freezers. But some people like the novelty of eating freezer cake every year on their anniversary so I guess you do you lol.

Thank you so much for your detailed response! ☺️ I certainly wouldn’t complain about leftover cake haha! Though we do have quite a tiny freezer 🤔 this really helps though - thank you! 😊

Depending on the size of the tiers - yes. 8"+6" is about 34 servings; 10"+8" would be about 57 servings. That's more than you need but you'd get leftovers 😊. The bigger tiers also make the cake look more substantial. We did the whole big original 3 tier plan for our cake because this was a big deal to me (I bake/decorate on the side) and was obsessed with our custom design. We did have the option to go down to a 50 person cake - 8"+6"+4" - so that could be an option too; mini three tier wedding cake? We also had dessert included - can't complain about cake in our freezer!!
