Wedding cakes

What is everyone doing for wedding cake flavours? We're planning on having a tasting closer to the wedding but not sure which flavours to try.

The bakery choice you go with will offer types of cakes and fillings/custards to taste. This will help in knowing what flavours you both can build upon.

My baker suggested and I went with her choices of Italian sponge cake and she had me taste 3 custards that were layered in between. The 3 custards were chocolate, vanilla and lemon.

I have trusted her choices and get my cakes from her every time since I have gone to the bakery since then and get fresh pastries/goodies every chance I get.

That is a cool idea! Well my mom is going to be making our cake and cupcakes so she'll probably let us try as many flavours as we want haha Smiley smile I think we're only at two flavours right now though.

We're not having a cake, we're doing mini ice cream sandwiches instead. We chose 2 classic flavours (vanilla and chocolate), and went for a fun flavour as our third (salted caramel).

How many options can you try at cake tasting?

I would use that opportunity to try the out of the box flavours and see if they'll pair nicely with the classic ones.

We tried 3 - vanilla with burnt caramel frosting, chocolate with dark chocolate frosting, and red velvet with cream cheese frosting. We only liked the first two, but we chose to have burnt caramel frosting on all 3 tiers. So it will be top tier gluten free vanilla (for me), middle tier vanilla, bottom tier chocolate.

It's one of those flavours you either love it or hate it... but it's super unique in my opinion for a wedding cake (lemon too!)

I'm definitely getting them re-made for any future events we have. They were so good.

My fiance loves coconut. I'm not a huge fan but I do love lemon and red velvet. They'll probably be a part of our taste testing.

OMG. We had coconut cake with coconut icing, lemon cake with lemon icing, and red velvet cake with vanilla buttercream. They were all delicious, but the coconut/coconut is the most delicious cake I've ever had in my life. Seriously. We thought it was a little weird to have such 'light' flavours in January, but there was no dessert left at all. (We did a 3 tier cake, 1 fake, 1 for cutting, 1 to save, and mini cupcakes in 3 different flavours)... It was all gone.

We're doing cupcakes and a single tier for cutting: our cupcakes will have 3 different flavours and our cake another. My favourite flavour is lemon and FH's is chocolate so we made those 2 cupcake flavours. We also had funfetti for cupcakes since it seems more festive than regular vanilla lol.

Our cake will be strawberry shortcake, no particular reason lol

We narrowed it down to flavours we enjoy, and that most other people like as well. Since we're doing cupcakes, we could pick a few flavours. Ended up with Chocolate fudge and Spice cake, and are doing some French vanilla cupcakes, as well, for those who don't like chocolate or spice cake!

I didn't want a cake at all, but a very close friend offered to make it for us. It'll be part wedding cake and part birthday cake for my fiance.

We haven't gone to any and I'm not sure we will - but since we are getting a single tier for the sole purpose of cake cutting I sure hope we can!

My favourite cake would have to be either marble cake, funfetti cake, or carrot cake with raisins! I'm sure my FH won't care too much though as he doesn't have a sweet tooth like me.

Those all sound good. We're doing cupcakes for the guests as well and then just a small cake for ourselves. My mom will be making them and so far she's come up with carrot cake with a caramel filling and buttercream frosting. But we'll try a few flavours. 😊

I absolutely love sfoglia! I could see how that would be a difficult wedding cake though. It needs to be made on the day to stay fresh, and I'm not sure it's stackable. If I'm being honest though, I love a soggy sfoglia as much as a crispy one Smiley laugh

Ah I want to do something completely different and do a sfoglia cake. The problem is that everyone is telling me it's a bad idea (difficult to cut, expensive, etc.), so we'll see if I ever get to do my tasting Smiley sad

We haven't even begun looking at cakes yet, but we already know we want a Victoria sponge/strawberry shortcake kind of flavor. That has always been my favourite cake, and it is typically well liked by many. We also definitely want butter cream and NO fondant. I want a cake that most people will actually want to eat, not just something that looks pretty (no shade to fondant fans)!
