Wedding cake cost

Desmond, on January 30, 2021 at 10:48 Posted in Wedding reception 0 14

Hello All,

I am trying to get some insight on what it would cost for a wedding cake.

Our wedding is very small, 17 people (immediate family only) including bride and groom.

Ideally we would like a 2 tier cake something simple. I am seeing prices all over the board.

We are located in the GTA but the venue is just outside the GTA, Delhi ON.

For those of you that had small wedding around this size, what did your wedding cake cost?

I actually have been wondering the same as you! We also will be 17 people for an intimate wedding. I like the look of tall cakes so I'm leaning towards a single tier tall cake, maybe 7-8"...but I haven't looked into pricing yet. Also will have a custom cake topper to add to the height Smiley smile

Luckily my mom can make really pretty cakes. She is making just a tall small one for cutting plus a bunch of cupcakes..

We're doing cupcakes as a way of keeping it small! We have a baker friend who is doing some great flavours, fancy icing designs, and some floral toppings for $3.25-4.25 a cupcake and putting it on a tiered stand. It'd be a great option for keeping things more affordable for a smaller gathering without losing out on elegance, or ordering too much cake Smiley smile

I'm a pastry chef (in Alberta) and I just want to let you know that you definitely don't need a 2-tiered cake if there are only 17 of you. If you're trying to be budget conscious as well and stay under $100, my suggestion is either cupcakes (which can be decorated quite nicely and you could have a variety of flavours), or you could get an 8" round tier that has a simple decoration. If you ask for an 8" cake with 3 or 4 layers, it will give it enough height that it resembles a wedding cake tier rather than it looking like a birthday cake

I got a cake for my bridal shower. It feeds 20 people, one tier, basic design (I added flowers to it) and it cost me $80. Wedding cake is usually double.

If you aren't too set on a cake sometimes you can get cupcakes for not too much! That way you just need enough so everyone gets one and it takes some guesswork out of how much to get. Call around and get some quotes!

Are you serving dessert at the hall? If so, each person's portion of cake does not need to be that big. If you aren't, then you might need a bigger cake (esp if your guests are dessert types) to compensate.

A single layer, even if you get a bigger round, will cost less than multiple tiers for sure. I would try to keep it in one layer if you can.

If budget is a concern, try shopping at chain bakeries. They have more support and can keep costs lower than an independent baker. And as I mentioned, a grocery store cake can run you much lower than an indie baker.

I'm not even sure how big the cake needs to be. If a single layer is good enough then we are fine with this.
We aren't looking to spend alot on the cake we prefer to send more on the meal. As both of our families and our self would enjoy the meal more.
Our ideal cake is pretty much 1. Simple in design. Nothing extravagant.2. Should taste good.
We were considering going to a local baker to see what they can do.
Ideal we want to keep it under 100. But we have budgeted more for it.

It honestly depends on how intricate your frosting/fondant/design is and the quality of cake. You can get a grocery store cake for probably around $50 and slap a cake topper on top, or you can go to an artisan baker and it'll cost upwards of $200+ dollars.

Are you saying the top layer? Two layers for 17 people is quite a bit unless you get a skinny cake.
