Wedding cake

Melina, on January 4, 2020 at 17:44 Posted in Wedding reception 0 7
Hi everyone!
With a wedding of about 180 guests, should our wedding cake be big enough to serve all 180? My future mother in law said no more than 60 guests will eat wedding cake. What is your advice?

Do you have desserts at your reception? if so i would do about 100 ppl for cake. if your only desert is cake get enough for everyone!

We did a cake and cupcakes to feed 180 when our invited list was only 145. Our baker told us that most people stay until the cake-cutting, which is the signal that they won't miss anything else if they leave. Also not all guests will have a serving, but some might have seconds and/or thirds (i.e. kids, people with a sweet tooth, etc). I also advocate for having more than needed vs having less and some people missing out.

One recommendation is to have enough to give each guest 1.5 servings. However you know your guest list better than anyone. Maybe FH's family doesn't usually eat sweets so you might be able to justify having less. Or if you know both families clean out a dessert table, get a little more.

You can also freeze parts for your 1st anniversary.

Thank you everyone! We will probably do a cake enough for a little more than half the guests. We are still waiting on a couple of quotes from a few bakeries. Hope your wedding planning is going well!

If they have another dessert to eat with supper then I would say you only need about half of what your guest count is. If not then I would get enough for everybody on the off chance that some drunk people want seconds and that some people don't want at all.

Its true that everyone is for cake for dessert. The idea of having less and alternative dessert was the way I chose to have everyone served with crème brulee as the chosen dessert course. Apart from the top tier, the 2 tiers were sliced and served to main family and pastries of different variety were then plated as it was served.

My cousin that got married last fall, they decided to have the cake and indian dessert served during reception as it was small and gone fast. 2 tiers only and didn't keep the top tier.

You can go with cake as your main choice though you may want to consider to have mini size assorted dessert to avoid wastage.

    Welcome to wedding wire Melina!
I think of there is another dessert option you can get away with having less cake. I would still prepare for most guests to want some (but I love cake so maybe I'm biased!) Maybe 100ish of the 180. If it's a curable cake you can get smaller slices and encourage people to have seconds if there's some left, that's more flexible than cupcakes.
