Traditions - Garter or no garter

Denise, on March 5, 2020 at 09:26 Posted in Wedding reception 0 10

I'm a big fan of traditions, like something old, something new, something bold and something blue. But not sure about the Garter and all that goes along with it. Is there a classy way to do this?

I love the something old, new, borrowed and blue and I happen to have a sixpence that was given to me a long time ago. Like Amelia, I don’t like the going up the dress for the garter in front of family and friends. The thought just weirds me out, also I think there may only be a couple of single guys so it’s not worth doing. I will be wearing one though, but it will just be for my FH.

Thanks everyone for your ideas and Amelia, never knew about the sixpence piece - might be hard to find one of them these days Smiley winking

I'm probably going to skip it. Thanks for your help Smiley laugh

Good thinking, I'd never thought of it that way. We are in the same boat, older and mostly married guests. Thanks for that Smiley smile

I am wearing two separate garters. My main one is my Grandmothers which she wore on her wedding day - so it's my something borrowed and old. And then I will have a toss garter which will just be a basic garter.

I love the something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue (and a sixpence in your shoe) part of the tradition. I'm skipping the garter toss, partly because the roots of the tradition weird me out ("heres the brides underwear to prove we've consummated the marriage!" Ew.) and partly because my dress is snug and getting up there might be difficult.

I asked my friends about the bouquet toss and they want it, so I'll do it. But I've put a ban on the single ladies song while I do.

We are not doing the garter or flower toss. I think there are only about 6 people that will be at the wedding who are not married. I feel like that would be awkward for them. If we were younger and most of our friends weren't married we probably would do them

We did a garter toss, but we didn't do the whole "guy going up the dress to take it off" thing because I wasn't comfortable with that. I just slipped the garter off myself and handed it to my husband to throw.

I had one - we did the bouquet toss and the garter retrieval/toss too!

That's how I got my something blue; I had my garter that was blue - and technically new (but so was my dress, flowers, veil, etc.) It's not a part of the saying unless you make it be though.

Old: My Great Aunty Ann's Bracelet

New: Dress, Veil, Flowers, Garter, etc.

**Borrowed: Bobby pins from a BM who did my hair

Blue: Garter, and on my wedding band one of the stones is aquamarine (DH's birthstone)
