The great cake debate

Melissa, on December 3, 2016 at 12:32 Posted in Wedding reception 0 37

Happy weekend everyone!

FH and I are both stuck trying to make a choice about our cake...I'm kind of hoping to get some extra opions because we can't decide!

I am making our cake- I am an experienced baker, and have done cakes for weddings and events for years. To be honest I'm fussy and I want to do this mayself because I don't usually like bakery cakes. We had thoght we would have 2 flavours of cupcakes (each of our faves), and set them as a display on a wooden stand: like this:

2 Flavor Cupcake Display

2 Flavor Cupcake Display

But this colour scheme (for my beloved yellow!)...this display is muych taller though!:

Yellow floral cupcake stand

Yellow floral cupcake stand

We were not sure if we would have a cutting cake, due to our timelines- but we considered it. And then I found this cake:

White Chocolate Fresh Flower Cake

White Chocolate Fresh Flower Cake

I would love to make this cake, it is beautiful! I thought about making just one tier to cut, but I don't think it will have the same effect as a single layer.

Just looking for feedback! Maybe someone has a solution or compromise we have not condidered?? How do you pick between so many pretty options!?!?

I love this idea! I really wanted to do something like this but I think it might be out of our budget. Still looking around!

I bet I could get one to you in one piece! Smiley winking

For my sister's I did a 2 tier and cupcakes and it ended up being about triple the amount we needed! Lol- but 2 tiers did look much grander

I'm getting in on this late but I vote for a 1-2 tier display cake with cupcakes underneath!

And if you need quality control testing for the cupcakes, feel free to send me some! Smiley winking

I'd suggest doing the cupcakes on tje button and doing a 1 or 2 tier cake on the top of the cupcake stand... beat of both worlds. plus I have seen these before. but not sure what ur stand is like. there are sooo many examples on pintrest.

I was thinking with the cupcakes the guest could put them on their own plates but what do I know...for me if I have a cup cake for everyone currently on the guest list... $585 to put cupcakes on plates seems a little unreasonable to me!

Miso soup is yummy but not as yummy as cupcakes...it is more helpful on the fitting into a smaller dress size plan though! Smiley smile I want to make my alteration people work! Smiley smile

Miso soup does not equal a cupcake! Yummy- but nooo wayy!

The reason I was given (when I said waht the heck?? to the fee for cupcakes) was that dishes and servers are still used. That particular place was charging 4.50 a head for cake cutting so I told them no thanks. Beacuase 400$ to cut a cake or plate cupcakes is mental....I get it, wedding industry is big on charging for everything, but get outta here with that craziness.

My vendor includes the cake cutting...I think, they are control freaks and handle all the set up themselves and just have a food minimum with everything else included.

I can't believe believe venues would charge the cake cutting fees for cupcakes! They don't need to cut those! Although maybe I am not that surprised Weddings are expensive and it seems like everyone wants something for every last little thing. Smiley atonished

Also now I want a cupcake...or 2...maybe more...Smiley love but I will have some Miso Soup instead...

Thank you Emily Smiley smile Not so much of expert but I love cakes and I can't imagine birthdays or weddings without it! I'm not sure what I will pick because we don't have a date yet and I would probably pick my cake to go with the season. Hopefully if my best friend can make it to the wedding (she lives in another continent ) she would make it and I would be her assistant Smiley smile

OHHHHH those cake fees! I was amazed to the INSANE fees places charge for "cutting the cake"! My venue only chages if we would like ice cream served with the cake Smiley smile

Be sure you ask if they charge the fee on cupcakes too. I found a few charged no matter what, and some would charge if you didn't use one of their preferred cake vendors. One of those wedding fees that makes me rage!

Looks like you have lots of good advice already but in case you are still on the fence one other thing to consider if you decide to go cake over the cupcakes is whether or not your venue will charge to cut up the cake for you. In my searching for venues I noticed some of them include the cake cutting and some will charge you extra for it. I am personally leaning towards cupcakes for ours but I am putting off that decision until after Christmas.

Eat a cupcake with a fork? Extra weird, but I'll probably do it just to be safe. Buttercream on stain would make me cry

Well I learned something new Smiley tongue

And cupcakes are easier to serve but more awkward to eat, especially if I'm all dressed up at a wedding. The odds of me getting it all over my face and falling on my dress is WAY HIGHER than me missing my mouth with a fork Smiley winking

I do hate how tall the tall one is- our stand is very normal sized I promise!

I'm thinking I might do the same style as you seeing as everyone seems to agree that it will still look nice as a single tier!

Surprising fact: wayyyy faster to decorate cupcakes than a cake! there is a lot of knife work and smoothing on a cake (especailly if I am fastening chocolate to it like in this one!)

Cupcakes are just a piping bag and a fancy tip with a wrist twist Smiley winking

But I am leaning towards just one tier, because I really do love the style, but cupcakes are all around easier to serve!

I like cake... plus I think it'll be easier to make (having to ice like 100 cupcakes takes way longer than 2 cake tiers)

But having a tier to cut and cupcakes with it would also be super cute

I like the cake more for presentation. However, the second picture for cupcakes is also nice and arranged in way it is appealing.

Thanks Salume! I think if I go cake route I'll be brave and do three tiers, just for the drama, but it is good to consider that not eveyone likes the tiny cupcake style....a good cake does look pretty darn good!
