Studio vs Outdoor Photography

What would you choose for an engagement or couples photos shoot? Would you rather be outside or in a studio?

With outdoor photos, you can choose from a ton of different surroundings whether it be an urban setting or something more nature oriented like parks or beaches. You can really showcase your personality, especially if you contrast the setting with clothes that aren't typical of the setting like a formal gown and tuxedo in a forest. If you pick a location with lots of interesting architecture and structures, you can get a variety of shots in one go.

The draw back is, you're relying on the elements to play nice. The ideal light is during overcast as direct sun can be too harsh, which means you likely will have to adhere to certain hours for the shoot. If it rains, you have to reschedule. Depending on where you're located, it means you can only take photos during a certain time of year if you want to incorporate formal wear or else it'll be too cold or wet. And of course, you have to deal with passerby's and other users of the space if you're in a public place. Sometimes you have to pay for a permit.

With indoor photos, you are the star of the collection as there's nothing in the background that takes the focus away from you. With fine control on lighting and colour, your photos can come out making you look like a professional model during the shoot. The indoor setting means you can take the photos at any time of day or year. You can build a set, bring props, and even a change of clothes to showcase your unique style. It's also private so no interruptions between you and the photographer doing your thing.

Of course, the major draw back is that you're in one setting for the duration of the shoot so unless you have a super dynamic personality, you may feel the setting gets stale. You have to know to be comfortable posing in order to get a wide range of shots since you can't rely on reacting to the environment for candids. Though you can use fake backdrops, it won't look like the real thing if you're a nature enthusiast.

Which option would you go for if you had a choice?

Yes we felt the wind during our Christmastime engagement shoot! It was only about -5 at the time but the wind made it feel like -12. My fiancee had to remove her gloves so the photographers could get shots of the ring, then put them back on so she could warm up while the photographers got their equipment set for the next shot. Next day the cold spell hit us and temperatures dropped well into the -30s!

We chose outdoors for ours! My fiancee (like so many people) absolutely LOVES Christmas and so we had our engagement session done in front of the Christmas lights. We ended up being very lucky as it was only -5 out at the time and the December 3-week cold spell hit Alberta the next day! The photographer did an AMAZING job catching shots as the sun went down and then as the Christmas lights came on. We were so happy with the photos we got!

Outdoors! When we got ours done it was in January in BC. We went to the lake near us and there was some snow/frost on the ground still! It turned out to be an absolutely beautiful sunny day the wind was pretty cold when it came through lol! Heres a photo of the beautiful landscape ❤Studio vs Outdoor Photography 3

The humidity in Ontario is horrible!! Especially for my hair 😂 I'm lucky to live in the prairies and like 5 hours away from the mountains so it's not too cold here

It's our humidity. It's drier in Alberta so it "feels" colder in Ontario due to how wet we are. But depending on where you are, the elevation in Alberta means actual lower temperatures and I'd imagine more wind chill.

I’ve heard the same thing about Alberta - that Ontario winters are much colder somehow!

5am is definitely early!! Thankfully the winter shoot wasn't too bad! It was actually supposed to he when it was -30 but the photographer asked if we could reschedule and we went the week after and it was like -5. I just wore a sweater and I didn't feel cold until after we were outside for 2 hours 😂 overall I actually prefer Alberta winters vs Ontario (I grew up in Ontario) So far this winter we've only had 2 weeks of really cold and some days we still get +10 days!! Like today our high is 9 degrees where I live!

How was the winter shoot outside? I can only imagine how much colder it is in Alberta compared to Ontario due to the elevation.

I think I'll be using the studio for the next couples photo session I have. The option for the wife to not wake up at 5am for hair and make up alone is worth it lol.

We got lucky and I won a free engagement shoot from a photographer who just opened a studio so she wanted to do half the session in the studio then half outside in the winter.
Then we had an engagement shoot included in our wedding package so we did a summer outdoor shoot!
