Stressed out Bride

Erin, on February 21, 2021 at 00:00 Posted in Ontario 0 8
I have been doing so much research and price checking all over the place but as we are an extremely low budget couple our dreams seem to be crumbling down around us in dollar signs. Marriage license $175.00, venues running in the $**** area, catering $1200, photography anywhere from $500-1400, not to mention officiant, decorations, invitations, florals...etc. This is beginning to look impossible for us and it's REALLY stressing us out and to be honest quite depressing. Has anyone ever went through this, decided to elope then do a mock wedding later on? This is starting to look like our only option unless we do some really cheaply put together wedding neither of us want. What do we do?

Hank you are AMAZING!! ! Thank you for all this!! No my FH has his suit already and our wedding party has been told for the girls wear whatever length, style, material dress you want as long as it's red and the men have been told pretty well the same any style, fit, material is fine as long as it's black and white with a red tie.

You didn't mention your FH's outfit. Does he need to buy one?

Based on what you mentioned for other costs, it looks like you have roughly $2000 left for a reception. If you want to go the restaurant route, feeding 80 people at that price will be tough. That's less than $20 a head before tax and tip. Might be doable for a light lunch/brunch reception but I'd imagine options are severely limited at that price for dinner. If you reduce it to 50 people, your price point is raised to $30 a head before tax and tip, which could cover a plate of food and drink at most casual/family style places.

Another option is to rent a hall at your local community centre or church, which will work better in your price range compared to hotels and banquet halls. You can self cater with hot trays and platters from Costco and other major grocery stores. Spending $1000 at a grocery store can get you much farther at feeding 80 than spending $2000 at a restaurant. You can get trays of salad, bbq chicken and ribs, and other sides like potatoes or mac and cheese. Add another $300 or so to get a few two fours of beer and other soft drinks + $50 for cups, plates, napkins, and cutlery and you're set. If you go this route, you'll need a Special Occasion Permit from the alcohol and gaming commission for $45 to serve booze. Rent a PA with mic and speaker for things like music, speeches, and dancing.

Your best bet is going to be doing it in a public park, which you can buy a permit for very little. Then take everyone out and rent a restaurant. You can skip alcohol and do a 3 course meal for around $50 per person ($2500). Youre likely going to have to keep your guest number low anyways due to COVID.
