Somethin new, something old, something borrowed?

Dadou, on April 22, 2018 at 22:05 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 9
Hi Wedding Wire community!

I’m getting married this September and I just bought my dress! I’m so excited!

I always heard that on your wedding day, we need to have “something new, something old and something borrowed”.
Can someone explain this?

Is it true or is it just a populat say?

If it’s a tradition, can you give me example of what you had as “old” and “borrowed”?

Thanks,

I haven’t figured out my old yet, but my new will be my dress, my borrowed and something blue is this necklace and earring set that belongs to my MOH that actually matches my engagement ring exactly (They’re from the same store). They’re sapphires like the picture of my ring.

    It's a symbolic tradition:

Something old symbolizes the bride's family, her past, and tradition.

Something new is a symbol for a bride's new life ahead of her.

Something borrowed is traditionally loaned from another happy bride, and it symbolizes happiness.

Something blue is a symbol of fidelity, purity, and love.

A sixpence in her shoe is a symbol of future prosperity and wealth.

For me, my something old will probably be my great great grandmother's strand of pearls. She's my namesake, and my name, Peggy, means Pearl in Gaelic, so it seems like a great match! Something new is my wedding dress (of course). Something borrowed is probably going to be a handkerchief from my grandmother (who has been very happily married for over 60 years!). Something blue is my shoes.

Congratulations on your dress! It’s a very exciting moment! The full poem actually goes:

    something old,
    something new,
    something borrowed,
    something blue,
and a silver sixpence in her shoe.

Each “something” is said to bring something into your new life and marriage.

    My something’s are:

old - a handkerchief from my future mother-in-law that has been passed down for 4 generations

    new - my dress

borrowed - I don’t actually have this one yet, but I’m thinking of asking my future sister-in-law if I can borrow the bracelet she wore for her wedding

blue - is my hairpiece. It’s a comb that has blue stones and pearls.

I don’t know if I’ll be doing the sixpence, but we will see!

It’s a tradition, but not everyone does it. My something new is my dress, something blue and something borrowed is my mother’s sapphire necklace, and I’m thinking I’m going to tie some of my great grandmother’s lace on my bouquet as my something old.
