Socially distanced reception?

Imelda, on March 6, 2021 at 22:22 Posted in Wedding reception 1 17
Hello everyone!! I hope everyone and their loved ones are staying safe and healthy through all these frustrating times!

My husband and I already got married on our own in September, but we're hoping to still have a ceremony and reception at the end of May. I want to wear my big dress that I haven't worn yet! We are expecting to have a reception with a decent amount of people (we have an outdoor venue), but I'm almost positive there won't be dancing allowed and we will have to all be distanced. Has anyone had experience with this yet? What activities did you do after your dinner? We still have the open bar, so I'm not really sure how to go about this. Any suggestions or advice would be lovely!!
Thank you! Hope you all get or had the wedding you are hoping for Smiley smile

And there are probably companies from whom you can rent the games, too (if you needed a corn hole board, etc.).

Not at all! We all had a great time, and the tables were spaced enough that there was plenty of room. We even managed a bouquet toss!

This is a great idea!! Thank you! Did the guests find it okay dancing at their tables or did they find it awkward because you couldn't really mingle?

Since you’re outside there’s opportunity for lawn games like corn whole that you can play while being socially distant Smiley smile

I don’t have any good suggestions but just keep in mind peoples expectations are low lol of all the times in life to have a wedding I think people really don’t expect anything ‘fun’.
I’m sorry that’s not very helpful but I’ve been trying to wrap my head around that one with our wedding 🤣

My friend just got married in September, and most people ended up dancing at their tables. She did, however, do a game where every guest writes something for the couple to do on a piece of paper and anytime someone rings the bell they choose a piece of paper and perform that action. It was anything form a kiss to slow dancing to WAP. It was hilarious and kept the night super fun, and kept guests engaged. Good luck, and hope your reception is great!

Scribbl.io is basically online Pictionary that everyone can access on their phone. You can also find a ton of unofficial online versions of board games like Clue or other whodunnit mystery games that can be interactive.

The Steam platform has tons of online party games that can work on computer, phone, and play station.

I am a healthcare worker so unfortunately I completely understand the whole no mingling and masks ordeal! Hopefully some restrictions will change by May, but I will keep searching up ideas for distanced games! Do you have any suggestions in online games? You seem very knowledgeable and full of ideas; it'd be good to pick at the creative minds. We have had to postpone three times now so really not wanting to keep pushing it back.

There are tons of games that you can access online and each player participate via their phone. You can throw the game play up on a projector screen.

The idea is not a complete write off but generally rules are no mingling, which means going to each table for a dance is not allowed. And if they're not eating, they have to wear masks.

A fun activity can be to create a one-take music video. We were working at a wedding during COVID and the couple were running into the same problem as yourself, I suggested this idea and it worked out beautifully! The couples, in this case, you, would choose a song per table, try to customize it depending on who is on the table and you would have the DJ or someone who can mix it (I can help you with that if you don't have anyone) to mix 20-30 seconds of each song to create a track from all the songs together. On the day of the wedding, you would explain to all the guests what is going to happen, what song each table is getting, and tell them that they would have to keep the dancing to their tables. After that, the DJ would start the track and you would start your magical performance going from one table to the next with everyone dancing and having fun. It's a nice way of adding some dancing to your wedding while being as safe as possible.

This is where I got this idea from, now of course this is pr-covid but it can be lots of fun even with social distancing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi1syPvmAWg

We have another back up date in September but honestly getting so tired of having to push it back again and again. If Simcoe county's numbers can stay low, the venue told us we can host about 100! Fortunately our outdoor venue is a tent so if it rains there's always a chance we can be covered up. Do you have any ideas for digital Games?

Are you set on May or can you push it further down the year? The spring time has a higher chance of rain and it might still be chilly. How many are you looking to host?
While an indoor venue cab hold less people, you might have more options because you'll have access to power. That can enable things like audio visual, which can in turn run digital games and entertainment (slideshows, video clips, etc). You can do this outside as well but you'll need a generator (or run significant power from inside the venue).
