Socially Distanced Photography?

Ellen, on July 23, 2020 at 10:26 Posted in Wedding reception 0 5

Hi there!

We have our wedding planned for next weekend, its going to be a super chill affair and we are running it ourselves with some additional friends to help the event run smoothly and deal with food. The only vendor we hired was a photographer!

Speaking of photography in COVID era, does anyone have and ideas for group shots? Some people in our wedding party are vulnerable so they will be taking extra precautions. They will want to be distanced and/or wearing a mask at all times. I also want to make sure family is safe as it will ruin memories of my wedding if someone gets covid.

I think I would be fine with masks in some photos, especially the bigger groups (whole wedding party or whole family), but is there any way that we could actually have decent photos with people distanced?

Thank you in advance!

I’d definitely suggest talking to your photographer about poses and arrangements. You can definitely have distanced group shots and still have it look nice!

I think that's very doable. Find spots with different heights like stone ledges or benches. And if you have a relatively decent sized open field of green grass, photographer will make it work. Good luck!

We are having an outdoor wedding with about 30 people. we wouldnt need a full group picute, just the normal family/wedding party stuff. max 9 people per picture

Congratulations on your upcoming nuptials, Ellen. It depends on how many people you have. 10 people or so, you'll be fine. It helps if you can pick a spot with different height levels.

If you're talking about the full 50 or 100 in one shot, that's tough. If you're inside, and your space is long enough, your photographer can technically take five group photos of 10 people and then stitch them together in a panorama style photo. This is best done indoor, preferably without windows, because lighting is consistent. If you're outside and as soon as the sun or clouds move a wee bit, the whole thing will look off. I've done this trick once for an event held indoors.

    First off. Congrats!

As for photos, I think photographers can usually do some camera tricks/angles to make people appear closer in pictures if that is one of your concerns. Or they probably can suggest socially distant poses that still look good.

I'm also having a mini ceremony in about 2 weeks time and we will likely space out in all our photos (aside from the ones with just me and my fiancee). One of my family members also suggested that for 1 or 2 photos, we wear masks while standing together and then take them off just before the photographer snaps and then put them back on immediately after. Not sure if that will really work though.

But then again, I'm having a bigger reception sometime next year so I suppose I will still have a chance to get "normal" photos at that point.

I would have a chat with your photographer and maybe bounce some ideas back and forth!
