Skipped the engagement ring part?

Leah, on June 4, 2018 at 16:45 Posted in Before the wedding 0 23
My FH and I are engaged but we’ve skipped the ring part.

We’re both in our misd 30’s, live together and prefer for that money to be spent differently.

Any other “offbeat” or “unconventional” couples out there who skipped the engagement ring part? Did you do something else?

When I was younger I said I didn’t want a ring, I wanted a down payment on a house since at the time the costs were about the same. (Housing prices have gone up in our city so that’s no longer an option.)

Note - we will be getting wedding bands but will continue to think frugally re costs.

Comment with your alternatives to an engagement ring.

Tattoos or diamond alternative rings to save costs. I got mine from Honest Solitaire saved about 75% of the cost of diamonds from a local mall. If you don't want a ring, i would say tattoos on the ring finger or somewhere hidden and intimate.

I love my engagement ring, but I told my hubby he could go to a gumball machine and get me a ring and I would be happy. As like you said I would rather put the cost of the ring towards something in the future (house, wedding, kids etc.)

Our wedding bands we won for free from an expo which we both agreed we will upgrade our rings later on in the future maybe our 5 or 10 yr anniversary. But I'm not too worried about that at the moment.

Yes, the things don’t really matter to me. Our wedding is very special as it is on what would have been our daughters first birthday. I had a miscarriage last July. Also cutting down on decorations because we adopted our second dog, who was born a day after our daughters birthday. It was meant to be and he is the perfect dog for us.

You have to do what works for you. Got an engagement ring but glad my fiancee didn't spend too much on it. Down payment on a house sounds like a great idea.

We'd actually discussed this before getting married.

He said he wanted to marry me, but asked if i'd rather have a house or an engagement ring.

    i said house!

He still ended up proposing with a ring a few months after we bought our house though. And went above the cheap one i wanted.lol.

I was the one who proposed to my FH so instead of a ring I proposed with a bracelet for me and him to both wear. It wasn't the best quality (got them from Claire's), but it was something to make it real for us. If having the title alone makes it real for you then I don't see why having an engagement ring is necessary. Smiley smile

Thanks for sharing this, I recently lost my engagement ring due to the fact I lost about 90lbs. It was hard to get resized and the morning I lost it I was thinking of putting it on a chain. It was not too expensive and my fiancé hadn’t gotten it insured.

We have engagement photos today and I will be using a ring that my opa gave me for grad. He passed away 7 years and the ring is one of the only memories I have of him. I haven’t decided which way to wear it yet and we also need to polish it.

We skipped the engagement ring due to my husband giving me his rings that didn't fit anymore. I considered the gold ring as the engagement ring when moving his home.

I didn't want to spend a lot of money on an e-ring, and my FH definitely didn't (we are cheap, I suppose!) This is my second marriage, and I didn't get a ring the first time around, so it was important (but silly) to me to have one.

My FH knew I didn't want a diamond, so I asked for a cushion morganite, amethyst, or moissanite set in rose gold. He ended up getting me a 1ct morganite in rose gold, and it was just before Christmas so it was a steal of a price (less than $300). My wedding band will end up costing us more!

If you are set on not having an engagement ring, think about doing a bracelet or necklace that you can wear regularly, if you are a jewelry type of person. I'm not sure how out of the box you want, but I think something sentimental that you and your partner pick out is the right thing for you. Smiley smile

I did the rings because I’ve always wanted an engagement ring. My fiancé bought the engagement ring and band set and after taxes and the protection plan we spent less than $1100. I didn’t want a crazy expensive ring. And we live in the metro vancouver area so we’re not getting a house (unless we win the lottery) I think rings are very much to each their own. Some people love them, some people don’t really care either way.

I’ve never wanted a diamond and didn’t want him to spend a ton on a ring. Instead, he bought me a beautiful, simple opal ring...and a piano. I’ve been playing since I was a kid but only got to play on a real piano at my parents house (I had a digital). He told me he wanted to gift me one, so we found a beautiful used piano with a lovely sound. I love it and play it all the time. It was such a meaningful gift.

    We also skipped engagement rings!

What we decided to do instead is buy our wedding bands right away and wear them on our right hands until the wedding. At our wedding we will swap the rings over to our left hands Smiley smile

I didnt want anything expensive either. I'd rather have a house or go on a trip. BUT, I still felt as though I wanted a ring so I would always have something to look at and smile when I'm not with my hubby (I know, cheesy).

He knew I didnt want real diamonds but hat was my only preference. He found an amazing jeweler on etsy and ordered my ring from her Calgary based store. He could not have chosen better. The only "real" part of my ring is the gold band, and the ring only set us back $286,but youd never know it❤

We didn’t do any kind of alternatives. We are both young (I’m 26, he’s 28) and this will be our first marriage, together. I guess it depends on age and if you have any prior experience with marriage, which we don’t. Plus, it’s a once in a lifetime investment and a one time payment, so he bought my Engagement Ring and Wedding band together as a set.

We didn't do any kind of alternatives, but we did purchase some silicon rings from Enzo for when we workout and go on trips. I honestly like them more than the metal rings we purchased because they are so comfortable and it's a very economical choice. Maybe something for you to consider for your wedding bands if you don't care about having metal ones? I even got them engraved which was a nice touch.

I know several couples that did that, they both have simple wedding bands.

I don't think the engagement ring is necessary at all, my FH wanted me to have one and so I do (I do love it, but I was impartial to it). But if you two are OK with you not having one, then don't have one.
