Signing your surname at the ceremony

Chris, on August 15, 2017 at 21:05 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 7
If you are taking your husbands surname, when you sign you name immediately after the wedding ceremony what last name do you sign? Your maiden name or maiden name plus your married name or your married name?

If your are Mary Smith and your husbands last name is Jones do you sign Mary Jones, or Mary Smith Jones?

Do you sign Mary Smith and wait till you legally change your name?

I have not decided what I am going to do hyphen would be too long may have my maiden as middle still trying to figure it out.

Just wondering ...the things that make you wake up at 2 am Smiley smile

Thanks

The license at the time will require your maiden name. After 12 weeks or 3 months, the official marriage license will allow you to change your name to his along with yours if you wish to do so. Service canada will take care of the documents.

The paperwork should be clear, and don't hesitate to ask your officiant to help clarify!

Your officant should be able to help you with that! I am pretty sure it is your maiden name that you sign.

Yes, sign your maiden name. You use the name that you entered on your marriage license. I'll be hyphenating mine because my professional certifications use my current name.

You just sign your maiden name. The marriage license gets sent in and it will take about 8 weeks to get processed, then you can start changing your name (if you wish) on all of your documents. Until then, you should still be going by your maiden name!

I am pretty sure it will tell you what you need to sign and where. Maybe ask your officiant? They will have tons of experience with stuff like this.
