Should we purchase table wine if we are purchasing alcohol for the bar? (toonie Bar)

Danielle, on June 6, 2022 at 18:14 Posted in Wedding reception 1 13

Hi everyone!

We are planning to purchase alcohol for our wedding in August from Costco to have a toonie bar. The venue does not permit us to place bottles of our own purchased wine on the tables with dinner, we would need to purchase it through the venue if we wish for $30 a bottle...

We have been debating buying a white and red for our tables, will likely have 12 tables so that will put us at an extra $720. My fiancé and his parents think that since there are some guests who aren't wine drinkers will leave bottles half empty or not drink it at all, and it may go to waste. I thought it was a nice gesture to guests but am starting to think it could be a waste as well, especially if they already have their drinks they prefer from the bar. We are purchasing red & white wine, spirits, and beer for the bar.

Do you think it would be worth it for us to purchase table wine for the buffet dinner for guests?

We were faced with this problem as well. Ultimately we decided to forgo buying bottles for the tables (as there were quite a few guests who wouldn't go for wine), and decided to make wine available for guests to order themselves if they wanted. As we are having a host bar the guests could simply request a bottle of red or white and then have it brought to the table. It would also cut down on the amount of wasted wine if there were no takers at any particular table.

Unless you're giving really good wine (and even then), most people will prefer another drink of choice over standard table wine. I echo Liberty and say drink ticket is the way to go.

You could also have servers going around pouring wine asking if they would like red or white and have no bottles on the tables.

Last wedding I went to we actually traded one bottle wine with the other table so we had two red and they had two white...everyone was happy. However a drink ticket is a good idea too because they would be able to get a glass of wine with it and not worry about who drinks red, who drinks white or if they would rather something else.

I will be having 1 bottle of champagne on the tables and if it is not consumed my mother in law is a champagne lover so I'm sure she will be going around grabbing what's not drank after the bulk of our crowds leave.

we all have a couple friends who are winos so I'm sure it wont go to waste Smiley smile

check with your venue though maybe they could come around with wine rather than opened bottled on the table or have a pre poured table or a wine table instead that can be restoccked up to a certain amount?

im a wino so to me wine/champagne is a MUST

Then I honestly do not see both bottles going to waste. Like Amanda said speak to your venue, maybe they can offer you ideas or discounts.

Thanks Amanda! That would be great if that is the case. I will definitely speak with the venue and ask. Smiley smile

We're having 2 bottles of wine on each of our tables. One red and one white. We don't pay for them until after the wedding. If they're not opened, we don't have to pay for them. Maybe talk to your venue and see if that's an option you could do.

There will be 7-8 guests at a table. We will also be having 2 entrées for the buffet dinner, which will be chicken and beef brisket. Which means it will be tricky because red and white go with both dishes depending what they go for (or both), so I would prefer to have one of each if I am going to buy table wine because guests will have different preferences for red or white.

Depending on how many at the table? I am not worried about empty bottles, my brother and his girlfriend can drink two bottles just on their own, he's a sommelier.

Depending on your meal, you may just do the one bottle that compliments the dinner.

Remember 1 bottle of wine= almost 4 glasses if poured right.

I don't think it's worth it! Instead of doing table wine we gave each guest a drink ticket so they could get a drink of their choice from the bar
