Self Catering

Chelsea, on December 9, 2018 at 12:52 Posted in Wedding reception 0 9

Is anyone else planning on catering the wedding themselves? We'd like to but I'm not sure how to budget for everything we'll need to get it done. Maybe I'm just over thinking it? We want to do pulled pork and beef on a bun for about 80 people. I should just be thinking about how much meat it'll take to feed that many and go from there right?

Yes! 80 people is a much more manageable volume of food to deal with too!

It wont really be MY time as my motherin law and family members will be doing it. We're just paying for the cost of the food so it'll definitely be worth it to us.

We self catered! And by we I mean my mom and step dad- I actually had nothing to do with it. We did pulled pork, buns, meat and cheese plates, a couple salads, corn on the cob, baked beans, and desserts for about 150 people for about $2000. So works out to just over $13/head. So in our case it saved us HUGE. That cost also included buying and of the serving dishes and stuff we needed.
Basically how we worked it was that all the food was made the day before and the pork was smoked overnight so it was ready the morning of the wedding. It was all dropped off at the venue and we hired some friends of ours to deal with the food for the day and serve the food. So that costed us another $400 but worked out SO WELL!

It is is a huge amount of coordination and effort but we were able to do everything exactly as we wanted for way cheaper than a caterer. The cheapest quote I could find here was $50/plate for BBQ style food.

It doesnt save all that much money in the long run, especially when you consider your time! Time is valuable and you will have lots of other things to worry about!

I was going to but everyone kept telling me it was a bad idea. The original plan was tacos so we now have our favourite Mexican restaurant catering for us Smiley smile

We’re doing a similar style dinner, but are having it catered by a food truck! We’re in Calgary, AB, but we were able to build a dinner menu with smoked brisket, pulled pork, roast chicken and multiple sides for $25/head! We’re also able to have the food truck prepare the food and serve it buffet style so our guests can have whatever they like! I hope you can find what will work best for your wedding! good luck!

I mean, in the end it may not be worth it... I'm actually going with Danny's Whole Hog BBQ and it will end up being roughly $18 per person. I think that's pretty good seeing as what they provide it the pulled pork, buns, salad, and you can add on much more for so cheap. Highly recommend them! Buuuuuuut, I can't say for certain if they would be willing to drive out to Brandon... I know that the will be making the trip to my venue out in Elma Manitoba which is a drive time of 1 hour and 15 minutes for them but Brandon is over 2 hours away from them. Worth checking out though!

If you still want to try and price it out for DIYing it then I would say to perhaps have a little trial. Maybe go get a pork roast and see how much it feeds? Like make a supper and see how many leftovers you get from it and see how much that supper cost to make.

Also, congratulations on the engagement and welcome to the wedding wire community!!!
