Registry for Big Appliances

Marissa, on April 24, 2020 at 18:34 Posted in Before the wedding 0 10
So I was talking with my sister, and I told her I wasn't doing a registry because we have a lot of household items that are usually on registries.

One idea I had was putting a money jar for our honeymoon, but we ended up booking our honeymoon already and chose a cheaper destination than originally planned (though we may have to cancel honeymoon - currently at the mercy of Westjet).
Our house came with not very good appliances - fridge, oven, washer and dryer are all used and in poor condition. Our fridge is falling apart!
My sister suggested we do a registry for appliances that people could pay into with whatever amount they choose. I like that idea, but I don't want to make my family and friends feel pressured to give a bigger amount of money due to the registry items costing more.
Should we do a money jar, or has anyone heard of registries for something like this?

You could register where you want to buy your appliances. Most registry places have option to buy gift card or if you have a group of friends could pool money together to buy stove or washer. Just a thought.

Yea I feel like it's better any money goes toward something needed! Update on honeymoon westjet let us cancel now, so putting money towards honeymoon is an option again for us! We have a credit we can use next year so now we're considering if we still want to stick with previous honeymoon plans or choose new destination.

I like the registry for items you need! but either one is fine. im sure people will give you cash at the wedding so you can use that to upgrade your honeymoon

Okay good to know people may assume that. Yea I can let them know if I have anyone asking. I've only been to three weddings - one had a honeymoon jar, and the other two had a gift table, so I assume the other two had registries but I went to those weddings as a plus one so that's why I'm not 100% sure. Thanks for advise Smiley smile

If you don't have a registry most people would assume you would prefer cash, and anyone who asks for something specific you can mention that you've been saving for new appliances and would love some help with that.

Older guests sometimes think cash is impersonal, so if you give them a reason when they ask why you didn't register it might go over better.
I would avoid a jar as people might think it's for money above and beyond their gift.

Thanks we'll consider that! I've thought about only mentioning of people ask, but maybe that's not fair. For me I worry we're going to have people wasting their money on things we already have. I'm not sure what is standard at weddings that might not be a thing or issue people have

I haven’t heard of a registry option that allows guests to pay for a portion of an appliance.

A lot of weddings have a card box where guests put their cards (which may contain monetary gifts). I worry that a ‘money jar’ may not be well received by guests and could come across as too direct of an ask for cash.
You could always have no registry, most wedding guests will give cash in a card even if there is a registry. Then you can just put the cash you receive towards buying appliances.

This is a first and something to consider to put on the invitation as a gift to pay towards your day. Funds going towards your honeymoon can go for the appliances instead when you need it more and wait if needed to go on the honeymoon. The monetary gifts given to you can be put towards your purchases of the appliances personally.
