Reception Song Playlist!

Kate, on August 14, 2023 at 23:31 Posted in Wedding reception 0 6
Let's talk reception playlist. How did you come up with your song choices? Was there a certain genre you played more of? Any songs you wanted to stay away from?

Although we did hire a band, my husband and I created a playlist to give to the band to have played in between sets/during dinner. A lot of these songs honestly consisted of Motown and soft acoustics as that's what we love (we had the band play a lot of Motown as well to get people dancing!). I "exed" a Van Morrison song as I once had an ex boyfriend make me a gift with the song lyrics carved in the back lol sooo thought I'd leave that song out.

We are both very romantic so we are in the process of writing down songs that we like. The majority of our songs will be slow

We will be surprising our parents and grandparents by playing their wedding songs at our wedding.
My parents wedding song was Groovy Kind of Love and my in-laws wedding song was Here. We are thinking of having all of our special dances done after dinner before our guests get to dance

When my guests RSVP'd I gave them the option to mention what they wanted to hear, and also what I like hearing at weddings. It's a small wedding no DJ, so I just added my list on Spotify for the reception and also the in between music.

My husband and I didn't give our DJ any suggestions, we just let him read the room and he was bang on to all of the music! We just gave him the music we wanted to specific things like garter toss, bouquet toss etc

Our DJ has a portal where we can choose must plays, play if you can, and do not! We have a few songs on our do not that are just detestable to us 😂 (apple bottom jeans), but focused more on the must play! I am from Alberta and my fiancé is American so I want some line dance songs to teach them some of our moves. We asked those we love most for any special requests (my parents want their wedding song) and then just picked our most favourites, and will let the DJ work his magic for everything else!

We only gave songs for specific moments, like first dance or entrances etc. Otherwise, I let the DJ use their judgement. If I were to run an event and the DJ and band was consistently playing something that the crowd is not vibing to, I would suggest a different genre or type of music but not specific songs.
