Receiving Line Outdoor Organization

Allison, on January 3, 2019 at 11:02 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 6

Looking for some help in regards to achieving a successful receiving line. We are having an outdoor ceremony (should the weather permit) and we were hoping to thank all of our guests in the form of a receiving line after the ceremony. The problem with having the receiving line on the lawn would be that there is no specific way to leave the ceremony therefore people might disperse in every direction.

At my brothers wedding, everyone had to take a short path through the forest to leave the ceremony spot therefore creating a line and they were able to have a successful receiving line.

I was thinking we (bride, groom, parents) could line up near the door to the inside of the venue (where most people will end up at some point during the cocktail hour) and then people would see other people lining up and kind of maybe take the hint at what we are doing?

In some situations a receiving line makes perfect sense. In our case, we really would love to have one, but I am not sure how we can manage it.

I have seen this done where the family had 1000 guests for reception and felt it was longer to get in greeting the family entering.

For a small wedding, I can see this happening considering there is plenty time.

Medium or large weddings I would skip it due to the time frame and others that want to get through if they need to use the washroom.

If we do decide to keep it traditional and have the receiving line form right after the wedding I will most definitely have our officiant make an announcement, that is so smart! I thought about where I could include it on the wedding website but nothing really made sense and I know not everyone will see it there. And then we could just form it by the doors to the inside of the venue that way people go and find the bar, snacks and activities we have set up for them. Thank you!

I am not a grand entry kind of person so this definitely could work for us! I will mention it to my MC as she would miss out on that part of announcing but that might be nice as it would prioritize our family photos, as well as give people the hint not to linger to long as everyone (including themselves) is waiting to eat. Ah this could be perfect thank you!

I agree with Jennifer. I think as people are heading into the reception is a nice place to do it, if you aren't planning a grand entrance... Or find a way to herd/funnel the guests after the ceremony... haha. Either way, I'm sure people will see the bride/groom standing there, and figure it out.

Regardless of venue. I have found best place for the receiving line is right before going in for the reception.

the other option would be after the ceremony (if its outdoors and you have chairs) is after you walk down the aisle/recessional. just move about 20 feet from the end of the seating area and make a line. before the recessional starts, you could even have your officiant announce that you will be having a receiving line.

Sounds like you are in the same situation as me with the whole outdoor space disbursement. I think that we will most likely skip out on it and just mingle throughout the night but if we were going to attempt it we would for sure head to the reception venue's doors and wait there while people filed in.
