Re-thinking Cupcakes

Samantha, on January 15, 2020 at 08:54 Posted in Wedding reception 0 10

Morning everyone!

I'm just looking for some outside opinions on a situation that just came up. I emailed the baker that I had been hoping to order cupcakes and a small 6" cake from back in October and never got an answer back, so I tried again on Monday, and got an automated email back saying that she's closed her store, but she's just moved to a rented kitchen facility. I haven't put a deposit down or anything, but FH and I had chosen our flavours and were super excited about them, we're just unsure of her situation now and whether or not to try looking elsewhere. Or if this is fate telling us we should just take this as an opportunity to forgo cupcakes all together. With our dinner caterer we get an amazing dessert already, plus a late night snack, so I'm thinking that the cupcakes may have been over-kill but FH seems to think it's a preposterous idea not to have them. I was considering to keep FH happy, that maybe we go somewhere else but get mini cupcakes as opposed to full sized ones.

What do you think?

Thanks for all the input ladies! I've called the baker and she never answered so I left a message and if she doesn't get back to me by the end of the week then I'm definitely going to be looking elsewhere. And FH seems to like the compromise of mini cupcakes, so everybody is happy!Smiley laugh

I'm also biased like Kelsie since we had cupcakes at our wedding (which were also part of our decor).

We did our cake cutting/cupcake serving later so it wasn't like guests just ate dessert. I would look at other bakers since it seems like your FH really wants them lol. You could go the mini route too since it's not as much food to put on guests.

I’d find another baker. Just because I would be worried that they would be this difficult to contact closer to the wedding, giving you way more stress than you need.
The mini cupcakes is a good idea, that way your FH gets what he wants and it’s not a ton of food for your guests to eat.

Id probably stick with the same baker actually! To me it looks like they are still invested in their business but needed to make some changes to sustain it. Small businesses are hard work. They could have easily just closed their doors for good. Also if you liked the flavors why change it up now!?

Also it seems like your guests will be in good hands dessert wise with your main menu so no worries there and FH likes the original bakery - so CALL this baker first and see what’s up!

I’m a little biased because we’re serving cupcakes to our guests.

Cupcakes for us were cheaper than having a bigger cake to accommodate guests.
We’re also serving the cupcakes at our midnight table rather than at dinner as our dinner comes with a dessert already.
As a guest, and someone who isn’t super fussed on dessert, I prefer a cupcake to a piece of cake.
I agree with Meaghan, id look into another baker due to the concern that the person you’re looking at has moved around so much.

I would definitely look for a new bakery. The stress of chasing this person just doesn't seem worth it.

Mini cupcakes seems like a great compromise. I figure if people watch you cut a cake, even a small one, they will likely want cake too.
Do you remember what flavors were FH's favorites? You can probably as a new bakery if they have something similar.

I would look elsewhere and if you FH is that determined to get them - give it to him if it's in the budget! Can't see guests at a wedding being upset with more dessert! lol

I like the idea of mini cupcakes though, they are cute and if people want more than one they can have more - where as if you have regular size cupcakes people may not eat all of it and it would be a waste.

I think mini cupcakes are a good idea. I find a whole cupcake can be kind of big! Especially with all the other food, if you are primarily doing it because your husband wants cake, I think it makes a lot of sense to have it on a smaller scale.

I also think i would look for a new baker. It makes me worry when a vendor is in so much flux and not responding as expected.
