Planning the Seating Plan

Caitlyn, on August 26, 2020 at 20:31 Posted in Wedding reception 0 5

One of the final details that we had to organize for the wedding was how we were going to seat guests. We knew we wanted to assign tables, but let guests choose their seats at their assigned table. As RSVPs rolled in I be an mocking up a seating plan using the online Wedding Wore seating plan arranger, as well as making a hard copy in a notebook. Some tables were easy to fill, others were quite a puzzle with making numbers in different family units work together. There was only a tiny bit of drama with my MIL kept wanting us to move two guests away from each other after we’d submitted our seating plan to the venue and the poster printer so we had to tell her “sorry, they’ll just have to behave like adults and put their differences aside for one night”, and they were able to.

How are everyone else’s seating plans going or are you forgoing a seating plan all together and just letting everyone pick their own seats? Has it been a hard puzzle for you or a piece of cake?

Okay despite the fact that we are still 366 days out I am already having major anxiety on the seating chart front haha. Before we postponed to 2021, I had been working on a rough draft, and had made an effort to seat family and friend groups together. I’ve since learned that my future in-laws have a VERY strongly held view that families / other groups of guests should be mixed / intermingled. (This discussion arose after we all attended an outdoor wedding recently. My in-laws complained that they were seated with their own extended family who they see “all the time” and maintained they would have preferred to with people on the bride’s side who they did not know).

Interested to know people’s thoughts! Would you rather sit with familiar people, a new people, or a mix?

Oh man, guests and seating has been the worst part of my planning. There’s so much weird tension between my side of the family that it was like a game of Risk trying to get everyone on a good spot and away from each other.

Seating plan with assigned seating for sure. It's not even about who gets along with who (though we have a few of those) but a good chunk of our guests will have food allergies that the venue and catering team needs to be aware of when sending out plates.

My fiance and I aren't doing a seating chart. Our entire guest list is only 65-70 and everyone gets along on both sides so it was a easy decision for us.

Seating plan was an easy one since I knew exactly how it was going to be arranged. It went from parents, aunts and uncles from mom side to mixed family towards the next few tables. Families were the main focus followed by 2nd Family, co workers, and friends. It went well and the set up of favours had names by families, couples and individuals. Escort cards were kept by tables before the guest book and money box.
