Outdoor weddings and sun?

Kelsey, on May 19, 2021 at 10:16 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 19
I have found a beautiful outdoor site for our ceremony but I'm nervous as it is mostly full sun area, and I'm worried the sun will be in our eyes and squinting the whole time and pictures will look terrible. Anyone come across this? What was your solution? Put bridal party in the shade and guests in the sun? Was the sun in your eyes not actually a big issue?

A canopy small enough to stand under would look nice or posts with sheers and garlands for décor to have the sun not as bright and your pictures come out beautiful. We had somewhat the same type of space facing the waterfront though and the sun was bright. The pictures came out great as the light was natural.

Just double check with your decorator. Certain things can be moved easily but if it's something where they have to tear down and put back up again, you'll end up being charged extra. And sometimes, it's enough money that you might as well have rented a second backdrop.

    Hi sara,

It's exactly what you said! We are planning our wedding for next June, and we have decided on an outdoor wedding. Tents will be a nice option.

Check with your photographer. They might have some great ideas on how to deal with the sun

Would you be able to do an arbor or backdrop of some kind to hide the trail while still giving the look you are going for?

I think Hank's option might be the best. Your guests will be facing the sun but they can wear sunglasses. Another issue with the current orientation is that you and your partner will be in different lighting for photos so it might make it difficult for your photographer to get good photographs with the uneven light.

It's an option I may have to explore. It's just that the backing on that side is much more sparse and you can see onto a trail and the backs of some buildings (wouldn't know it from the original angle lol)

Are you willing to switch the orientation of the floor to something like the below? You can still walk out from the entrance but turn west when you reach the middle. This way, the sun is behind you and the trees provide you shade. It'll suck a bit for your guests but they can avoid the sun by not looking up and since they're not the star of the show, they can wear sunglasses.

This is the best way I could think to illustrate 😂 technically I would be facing SW and groom would be facing NE. it's a straight shot from my camera angle (im standing at the entrance). This was about the time of day we are thinking as well

What direction are you facing from this angle? Is the rock east, north, south, or west of the entrance?

So for reference, this is the site we have in mind. The entrance is the view the picture is taken from, and we would be standing at the larger rock (behind the one in the middle). The groomsmen will likely fall in the shade but the bridesmaids will all be facing the sun as well as me.

It'll affect you more depending on which direction you're facing at what time of day. Are you walking out of a building into the outside? What direction is the outdoor in relation to the building?

We are thinking maybe 330, definitely afternoon. And in the month of June. The spot I picked is a forested area with a clearing but when j went to check it out around that time a few weeks ago the sun hasn't moved past the treeline yet. I just don't want to worry about either the bridal party of the guests looking into the sun and squinting

Wow this is an interesting point. What time of day were you hoping to do the ceremony?

If it's late afternoon, the sun should be low enough in the sky that it shouldn't bother your eyes too much. If you're doing it mid morning - early afternoon I would look into a small gazebo or tent to get married under perhaps, like this:
