Officiant! How do i know they are registered?

Maribeth, on June 11, 2018 at 11:43 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 6
Hi!!

I wanted to ask everyone how would they know their officiant is registered? I am having anxiety about not knowing for sure and I'm scared our wedding won't be legit.

Sounds so silly I know but any recommendations?

Its best to check your local area to see if your officiant is registered. The office should be able to provide the information over to you.

Ask to see their certificate/license. they are supposed to be able to provide it to you. I would want to see it before booking with them.

Hi Maribeth, Service Ontario has a web page with links to finding officiants. They have both religious (with non-denominational officiants) and civil (city hall) officiants. The religious officiants link takes you to a download link where you can view all officiants for the whole province

You could also ask to see their certificate and it they seem sketchy about that, they might be sketchy in general and raise red flags

Of course not! I've seen so many movies and tv shows where it makes the marriage null that I too will be asking for proof! Better safe than sorry; if they are offended by that then I would be cautious for even using them as it would give me a feeling that they are trying to hide something.

I think of it like when you are going to get into bed with someone - you need to talk about the preventative measures and the testing before doing anything or it could result in some bad news.

Thanks for replying! Do you think it would be too offensive to ask to verify the expiration date?

I know that in Manitoba we have a list of marriage commissioners on our government website - but I tried to find something similar for Ontario and came up with nothing. I believe you may have to contact your local municipality for more information. That or you could always ask to see his/her certificate to verify the expiration date?
