Officiant for paperwork only?

Carey, on September 21, 2017 at 15:11 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 9

Hi folks, my fiance and I are getting married next July in 2018. We have asked a good friend of ours to "marry" us (perform the ceremony) however in our part of the world he isn't able to get a license to officially marry us, we are required to have an officiant take care of that aspect. Has anyone else from BC (Canada) run into this? How did you explain the situation to the officiant, and were you able to get a different price? I'm curious as I've been quoted between $400-$800 for an officiant and in our case we wouldn't be taking advantage of all the services that are generally included in those packages, so I'd like to see if anyone has been able to get a bit of a cheaper deal for this type of setup.

Any thoughts are appreciated! Smiley smile

Yes, there are a few "legal" words the officiant has to say & to sign the papers to make it legal in BC. We are from Alberta but getting married in BC. Where are you getting married?

Try looking on “ All Seasons Weddings”, I used them for my officiant . But I’m not sure if they can do that.... but it’s worth a shot

No worries! Hope it goes well! We were actually going to do this ourselves but then we found out a friend of ours from soccer is an officiant so he will be marrying us now Smiley smile

Thanks Maegan! I contacted an officiant who actually suggested doing this (had to look up on the BC gov website for her name, rather than using WeddingWire services though). She also said she could do it a few days before the ceremony, which would make our legal date of marriage different but would be out of the way and wouldn't have to worry about it on the day of. I appreciate your response! Smiley smile

My fiances brother and sister in law had a friend speak diring their ceremony and 'marry' them. They then had an officiant show up later in the day during dinner when they went and signed the paperwork to make it official. Nobody noticed they disappeared for a couple mins and nobody at the wedding knew the ceremony wasnt official. Not sure about pricing though.
Their first option was to have the officiant sit in the crowd and witness the ceremony because that is all that is required and the ceremony would have been official then, but a situation came up with the officiants family and he wasnt able to attend so they had to change plans last minute and find a new officiant.

No problem! You could do it the day before and have a few people with you as witnesses. It would definitely be a cost saver over an officiant!

Maybe you can do a quick ceremony at town hall and then have your friend marry you at your wedding? I work for the town where I'm at, and it's cheaper than the fee for an officiant, it would be legal and that detail would be out of the way and you can have your ceremony the way you're envisioning!

You can certainly ask if there is a price difference for using less of the officiant's services, but I'm not sure you'll get a discount! They'll still have to physically be there and it keeps them from booking another wedding at that time.

Definitely ask around and also see if there are any of the parts that the *real* officiant has to do legally! There are other ways that you can split up the service, just ask which parts have to be done by the legal officiant and what can be handled by your friend!
