Officiant

Tamara, on September 23, 2024 at 18:11 Posted in Ontario 0 1
Hello all!
I am in a queer relationship trying to understand the officiant process. We want a friend to do the actual service but don’t expect them to become a certified officiant because it costs $$$ so can you have someone just there to watch the papers be signed. It would be a bummer to pay a full 500$ or so if they are just there ya know ? Anyways thanks so much

The officiant has to be the one that says all the words and do the paperwork. That's pretty much what you're paying them for and it's how your marriage is legally binding. There's no scenario where the officiant just stands behind and smiles while your friend performs the whole ceremony. The officiant has to be the one that "performs" the ceremony, even if it's the most boring barebones version.

If you want your friend to perform the whole ceremony without an officiant, you'll still need another legal ceremony where a legit officiant signs off on it. This can be done via a City Hall/courthouse wedding. You'll still need your witnesses at the legal ceremony.
