Non-religious Ceremony and Officiant Registration

Amber, on January 26, 2019 at 14:31 Posted in Wedding ceremony 0 4

Hey all! My spouse and I are not religious, and are looking to discreetly show that in our wedding ceremony (aka mentions of religion and god would be scrubbed from the stuff that is said, and we are doing our own vows). I'm curious about the logistics of this, if anything. Also for our officiant, my spouse's younger brother got his license when he was in Hawaii although I don't know if that counts for BC? I'd wondering how we can check and see if he would be able to qualify as an officiant for us and if it would be legal. If not we can look up one to use but if anyone knows of one in PG that would be fine with doing a non-religious ceremony that would be good to know about.

Otherwise, any tips or tricks for such a wedding? Most of our close friends are of the same thoughts as us but most of our family vaguely considers themselves religious, but I don't think anyone is going to raise a stink about it during, maybe a comment or two afterwards. If anyone has had such a wedding, please let me know!

tl;dr : 1) How do scrub religious affiliations from ceremony? 2) Would my spouse's younger brother's Officiant license from Hawaii count in BC, if not is it easy to register as a one time thing? 3) Anyone know of any non-religious (or fine to do a ceremony as such) Officiants in Prince George, BC? 4) Any other tips for such a ceremony?

Non-religious officiants are researchable on the internet as I had done that myself and had no god mentioned on any part of it.

They do have different services you can choose what you want to have said and put it together yourself for the officiant to read.

I did write everything myself and one step was not mentioned due to the his license being taken away. Just a suggestion to look into.

We're having the legal ceremony done by a BC commissioner the morning of the wedding (should take all of 15 mins max), and then my mother, who's not a commissioner, or minister will perform the ceremony in front of our guests.

Of course there are a number of "non religious" ceremony script template son the website, but I'd be happy to share one that another WW member sent me a couple of months ago.

My mother's a Toastmaster and an excellent storyteller, so we've given her a guide but are pretty much leaving the rest up to her.

That is helpful, thank you! I'll let my spouse know and maybe we will let his brother do something else instead, since he will be sad to discover it isn't validSmiley sad

    Hi Amber!

So I’m fairly sure your spouses brother’s license would not work here in BC and it’s not easy to register as one. However! The government of B.C. has marriage commissioners on their website. They are basic non religious ceremony officiants. And they are like $75 for an hour ceremony with all the basic stuff and an extra $25 for each additional hour. It’s a great way to go if you just want something basic!
