No dj, diy play list?

Autumn, on October 4, 2017 at 22:34 Posted in Wedding reception 0 5
We're having our reception at camp so a DJ would be expensive and a lot of work. We'd like to rent the speakers and equipment and just make our own playlist and use a laptop to play it. Has anyone done this and any suggestions on how to pick what songs and when to play them?

Thanks! We're still undecided. We just met with a DJ and he was $1700 which is way more than we were expecting.

Hi Autumn! This is totally doable, but it will still need to be someone's job to "man the music": queuing up specific songs for your spotlight dances (first dance, father/daughter, reception entrance, etc.), acting as the MC (asking everyone to welcome the bride and groom, releasing dinner tables if there's a buffet, announcing what dance is coming up "and now the father of the bride would like to dance with his daughter", pausing the music for speeches, etc.

Also make sure someone is on tech duty in case any of the equipment isn't working for any reason!

Thank you! Good point about the pause!I'm going to look into some kind of app or something that can blend the songs so there's no pausing. Might have to pay for it but it'll be cheaper than a DJ! Thank youSmiley smile

Oh and also, we tested all the songs to see if they were dance-able. Some songs we really, really liked, but when you put them on, they were difficult to dance to. I would also suggest keeping the slower songs closer to the beginning of the night. Once people really start partying, nobody wants to slow dance. That's my thought anyways, but I could be wrong! And to have a good mix of newer and older songs and be sure to have your parents favorite songs from their generation.

My brother did this for his wedding and it worked out great. My one bit of advice is to make sure that there is no pause between songs. I think that iTunes automatically puts 10 or 15 seconds between songs, which doesn't seem that long, but it is long enough for people to leave the dance floor. So just have the songs go back to back and people will keep dancing!
