Need advice on first dance!

Rebecca, on August 8, 2020 at 13:26 Posted in Wedding reception 0 7
Hey everyone! My fiancé and I are struggling to find a first dance song and need some advice! We thought about using the first song we ever danced to, “Bring It On Home to Me by Sam Cooke”, but it’s about a break up. Do the lyrics matter? Would it be weird to use it?

I probably wouldn't use a break up song - I think enough people will listen to the lyrics and find it odd. But the idea of an instrumental version is a great way to use a song that's meaningful to you without having a breakup song blaring during your special moment.

I'm also a lyrics person, so if I were a guest I might be a little confused about the meaning of the song. But finding an instrumental version could work, and if it's weird to dance to it without words you could make it an aisle song.

My fiance wanted something that wasn't too slow and shot down all but one of my suggestions. We're using You've Got the Love by Florence and the Machine.

I personally would choose a song not about breaking up... if you live the song add it to your must play list or do it as your last dance!!

You can always use a karaoke/instrumental version so you get your nostalgic fuzzy feelings without the breakup messaging.

The song choice is what you feel is yours to make. The lyrics though may not be appropriate for the occasion though some of the older songs are good by artists you like.

Some song choices alternatives if appeals to you:

I will always love you - Whitney Houston

Power of Love - Celine Dion

From this moment - Shania Twain

Stronger than a Diamond - Lindsay Ryan

I’m super big into listening to lyrics, so I have been over analyzing every song I’ve considered for our day lol. That being said, lots of people don’t even notice the lyrics because they’re more focused on watching the first dance! If it’s something that you know will bother you, I’d find something else. If you don’t care then go for it! We’re dancing to say you won’t let go by James Arthur.
