Name changing on passport??

Alyx, on October 7, 2022 at 15:07 Posted in Honeymoon 0 8
I’ve tried calling service Canada and they have no idea and I called service BC and they have no idea… does anyone know if there’s a time period on changing your passport and license?
We goto Jamaica in November and I haven’t started the process in changing my last name. Can I cross the border with my passport and license with my original last name ?

I am planning to change my last name to my wife’s last name. Professionally I use her last name but I was told to wait until after the honeymoon to change government issued ID just to be sure that there are no issues

We're going to Argentina for our honeymoon and we decided to wait until we get home to go through all of the name changes. I'll probably be using my FH's last name right away, but we're going to wait until after the international travel to change all my IDs so that we don't have any issues.

You could change your name in 15 years if you decided. There is zero time frame. I changed mine almost a year later (not that it's close to 15 years haha). I also didn't change my passport but I hyphenated so my maiden name is still my name.

When I applied for my passport in June I asked them about changing my name after the wedding and they advised me to wait until after our trip to change my name cause it can potentially cause problems so i'm keeping my maiden name until after our trip. Also we are going to Jamaica in November as well!!! Where and when are you going?

    Thank you for the reply’s!

All of my documents have the same name, which is my maiden name. I was hoping to change all information when I come back from our honeymoon because I realize changing that information is a bit of a long process So as long as I can goto my honeymoon with my current passport and ID (with maiden name) I just wanted to make sure I wouldn’t get stoped at the border in November for not having my new last name on my identifications ! Lol

If your passport and other ID don't match, you may have to bring your marriage certificate to show your name change.

If you haven't started changing your last name on any documentation, then you're still legally what you are born as, regardless of how you refer to yourself in person right now. Just make sure when you book flights that you're doing so using your current legal name, not your assumed name.

As long as your documents have the same name you are ok. But if you've changed your license and not your passport you may have issues. You have a few months to decide and change your last name. Doesn't have to be done now. I would wait until after you traveled to change all your documents, it's also a process, it's not over night.

    Hi Alyx,

I'm not too sure about time frames but you should have all of your ID and tickets in the same name otherwise they might not let you board....

Here is the link to an article on WW about this topic:

    Best of luck!
