Name change process during Covid

Michelle, on January 17, 2021 at 14:04 Posted in Just married 0 7
I got married in September 2019 but put off changing my name until after our delayed honeymoon in March 2020. I have only changed the last name on my drivers license so far. Has anyone changed their name on their SIN since the restrictions were out in place in Manitoba? I’m just wondering what I need to do to change my last name on my SIN. Do I need to send in the original marriage certificate, or just a copy?

Service Canada is great for online document changes provided the proper documents are photocopied and sent. My husband changed all his cards to the new last name provided with the marriage certificate document shown. Its great Hank got the site to share with everyone who needs to get this done.

Thanks for your help. One more question. When filling out the online form, would I put my married last name as the family name, or my maiden name?

There is a list of documents on the service Canada website (See Hank's link) and they go into better detail of what you need to send. I used my married drivers license and married mail, everything else still had my maiden name on it.

If I use a piece of mail, does it have to have my new married name on it? All my mail is still in my maiden name. And if I use my drivers license, do I use the license that’s in my maiden name, or married name? I recently changed it to my married name but still have the license with my maiden name on it.

I changed my name associated with my SIN entirely online. They had a list of required documents (I used birth cert, passport, certificate of marriage, my new license, and a piece of mail with my new last name on it).

My first attempt they rejected the mail, so when I reapplied I referenced my previous application and used their rejection letter as proof of name and address. The whole process took about a month because they sent my rejection and my approval via snail mail.
