Name Change

Kelly, on July 11, 2019 at 12:54 Posted in Before the wedding 0 2

Hi everyone, just me over here stressing again...

My FH currently has a hyphenated name and was planning on legally changing his name in a few years. We agreed that I would keep my maiden name until then, and then I would possibly take his name after the change. I was doing my research and I know there is a difference in assuming your spouses name and making a legal change. Would I be able to assume his new name in a few years, or would my only option be to do a full legal name change if it was not happening right when we were married

Unfortunately I think it's the same over here in Manitoba as well - my FH is changing his last name to his Father's (from his Mom's) and in order for me to assume the correct last name he has to get his name changed before the wedding. If he doesn't then I would only be able to assume his Mom's last name instead of his Dad's.

At this point I think legally changing your name later on may be your only option though. For my FH he went into Vital Stats Canada and that was over a month ago and his name isn't fully processed yet. (Takes roughly 4-6 weeks to change your name legally.)

I think you'll have to do a legal name change. My FH's bestwoman (BW) and her wife got married and the BW had a hyphenated name at the time. The wife wanted to only take part of BW's name, which BW legally changed, but since she had a hyphenated name at the wedding, the wife had to do a legal name change as well.

The rules might be different out in Nova Scotia, this was in Ontario, but hopefully still helps!
