More Hygienic/safe Dessert Table Ideas?

Marg, on October 8, 2020 at 10:58 Posted in Wedding reception 0 7

Hi!

Fingers crossed we can do our 50ish person (we have a 25 person list too) mostly outdoor wedding in May 2021 with the proper social distancing & other safety measures in place. This one element is obvious not a must-have, but I'd like to figure out if there was a safe way to do is a dessert table.

Pre-Covid Dream: a beautiful display of cakes, pies, baklava, cookies, etc. all on vintage trays and stands. Guests take what they like.

Covid Reality: That is gross. No one should be touching the same tongs and serving utensils. People could cough all over the pie.

The two ideas I had are:

1) Limit everyone to their one dessert as a part of dinner; served by masked staff of course.

2) Still have the display (maybe behind a plexiglas barrier) served by a masked staff like a dessert bar tender.

The big cons to #1 are that it is less fun and there is no choice really. The cons I can think of for #2 are the costs of an additional staff member (not a dealbreaker!), and maybe it would be awkward for our guests? Like... I don't think there's anything wrong with loading up a plateful of sweets but if you had to say it all out loud maybe it would feel shameful?

Thoughts? Other ideas?

I like option #2 as there is more flexibility to what you can try. And if people feel awkward asking for multiple slices at once they could always come back for seconds.

Very true! One of my lessons learned was that we put the cake period a little after dinner since we didn't want our guests to be too full and skip cake, but a few people left early and missed cake anyway. In hindsight, we should've kept it after dinner or not waited as long.

Also, because we timed it out, we had a lot of cake left over. We had zero problems sharing it with friends and family the next day though and we almost didn't have enough to give away! It was especially nice to share with guests who were in town but couldn't make it due to health concerns, etc.

I like the mini-pie idea - there's a place called Sweetie Pies not far from us that does individual pies, and if they are boxed up cutely then they could double as favours too if people didn't eat them right away!

That's why I like the dessert bartender options rather than presliced pieces, so many of my friends would probably go for a variety of slivers vs one big piece.

And it's super smart to just have a set dessert time rather than it being out all day!

We'll be serving wedding cake as part of our dessert course. We'll have some additional pastries that are pre-packaged and placed at each seat. Most bakeries I've talked to won't have a problem pre-packaging everything. Cookies and baklava works with that type of packaging. With pies, you won't be able to do slices but mini pies could work. Or something similar to pie like strudels and turnovers.

The only thing about going this route is your guests will each have an abundance of dessert. But maybe instead of offering a huge stack of desserts, you limit it to like 3 and guests can still get a variety.

I just had my wedding about two weeks ago now and we did something similar to #2! We had a dessert table with 5 different cakes for guests to choose from. They had to tell the server what they want and then the server would plate it and give it to them. We didn't have a plexiglass barrier but that would have been a great plus!

We didn't leave it out the whole time though, just an extra precaution since people are coming and going. We kinda had a period for cake and then when everyone was done they packed up the rest.
My MIL later told me she asked for a little slice of each of the 5 cakes so don't worry about the guests! They will come back for seconds if they really want to!
