Mini-moon in the Mountains

Hailey, on December 18, 2018 at 12:06 Posted in Honeymoon 0 12

Hello! My fiance and I have been talking about options for a honeymoon and are stumped.

We are moving abroad approx. 6 months after our wedding so we don't want to do a whole big expensive honeymoon. We are thinking of going on a small mini-moon. We want to spend a couple nights in the mountains (I have never been West). Any suggestions on destinations with things to do / see (it will be May/June). We are interested in doing some hiking and sightseeing but aren't familiar with the area at all.

You HAVE to go to Peyto Lake. It was one of our highlights when we went. Moraine Lake, of course. The hot springs in Jasper are awesome and one of my favourite hikes is right next to them (Sulphur Rigde). Panther Falls, Athabasca Falls, Sunwapta Falls. Valley of the Five Lakes. Lake Agnes. I have an extensive list of cool spots to check out...

I would totally recommend staying at the kananaskis mountain lodge. The hotel itself is stunning, and the scenery around is beautiful. I only stayed a night there but i remember thinking how it would be a great place for a mini moon or something. There is a ranch next door for horseback riding/trails if you're into that, plenty of hiking and golf. The hotel also has a nice spa that they recently added. It's a very calm and peaceful place. I love Lake Louise but in June it's so crowded with tourists, so I appreciated how Kananaskis was more quiet.

If your heart is set on the Rockies, all of the big spots have been mentioned, along with the advice to stay in Canmore.

Moraine Lake road opens up around May long so if you're visiting earlier than that you may not have that as an option. If you're looking for a splurge, a night at the Moraine Lake Lodge is a great way to take in the lake either early morning or late evening after the tour busses have gone. (You're also guaranteed parking which is a bonus!) The stars out there are unreal....I have no words to describe it. It's just awesome.

At the south end of Alberta is Waterton Lake National Park. May/June is not super busy and it's one of the prettiest spots I have ever been to. There are lots of trails in the area, and bring your passport if you want to take the boat trip/hike that crosses the Alberta/Montana border into Glacier National Park.

What is about travelling on a caravan? Must stay near a bank of a river?

I second what Gina said! Stay in Canmore/Kananaskis and you can drive into the National Park for day-trips! You'll 1) save money, because you won't have to pay for your stay in the NP; 2) won't be walking into crowds of tourists on planned tours like in Banff or Lake Louise.

If you are considering visiting Lake Louise, go EARLY! By 10am, the parking lot is full and the lakeside is crowded.
We got engaged at Mount Engadine Lodge, in Kananaskis, and would recommend it to everyone who wishes to stay in a secluded and romantic area.

I would recommend lake Louise, Kananaskis, Banff or Canmore. Lake Louise is stunning! The scenery can’t be beat. It can sometimes be hard to find a place there though as they can book up fast! I don’t go to Banff much anyomore because it’s way to touristy! There are so many people on the streets and it’s lost its uniqueness to me. Canmore is a lot like what Banff used to be. Its great there. I love the lodge at Kananaskis (that’s where we are getting married) we go every year. You can park your car and stay for days without driving anywhere. It’s secluded and lots of trails, rentals and everything else. I love the Rocky Mountains, you can’t go wrong anywhere.

So many places! Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper, Canmore as mentioned above. Yoho, Revelstoke, Golden, Pemberton, Whistler. My fiancé and I are landscape photographers and have been to many places around here. Let me know if you want more info/pictures to help you out.

Check out the sunshine coast! We have lots of mountains and ocean views and it's a very popular choice for tourists!

I will forever promote my little hometown! If you like hiking too, check out the sunshine coast trail! It's a 180km hut to hut trail!

Canmore is also beautiful and not far from Banff but slightly less touristy and less expensive! There are some nice hotels and check out airbnb too!
