mc or not to mc

Grace, on December 15, 2021 at 23:14 Posted in Wedding reception 0 2
Hello!
Just wanted to get some thoughts from people if they were hiring someone to be their MC/Host for their wedding? I'm getting married October 2022 - I have pretty much all my vendors booked except hair (anyone know someone who is good with naturally curly textured hair?!)

I have hired a DJ who will do minimal MC duties, like introducing the wedding party or when other things or happening but that's about it.
Is an MC required? Thoughts? I'm a bit torn on if I want to have someone host and I tried to think of there was anyone (friend/family) who would fit that category but none come to mind.
Thanks in advance!

I would agree with hank on that it depends on how much is going on.
For us we are a mixed with untraditional and traditional. My grandma said I need MCs so I chose two of my family members but there’s not a whole lot for them to do! We aren’t having a garter toss or bouquet toss and possibly a cake cutting if we have time but for the most part I just want to visit with my guests and dance!
I regret having MCs my dj easily can do the job of introducing us or saying it’s time for dinner lol. So for me and my situation I don’t think I need MCs it’s a bit useless

It depends on how many things are happening at the reception. Will the DJ make introductions for any activities you are doing like first dance and bouquet toss? How about announcing the dance floor opening? Will they call up/announce names for speeches? Or is it strictly just the bridal party intro for the grand entrance? If the DJ will take care of all of that, and you don't need further entertainment, you could be fine. But if you have a lot of lull periods with no speeches, activities, or games, having a MC hype the crowd can really liven the mood.

On that note about the DJ acting as MC, make sure you get a sense of who will be working your event. We signed our DJ based on them providing emcee services as part of the package and she was not good at all. Her voice did not carry, even with a mic. We should've done our due diligence but it never crossed our mind that a DJ with years of experience working weddings could exhibit such a lack of energy. Lesson learned.
